New Jersey passes new affordable housing plans

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy recently passed new legislation that would modify the regulations governing housing construction in order to improve affordable housing in the state. The legislation endeavors to generate 200,000 units of affordable housing by assisting municipalities in meeting a constitutional requirement to offer an equitable portion of homes that low and moderate income families can afford, according to North Jersey News.

Judge dismisses six counts of election interference in Trump Georgia election case

In another addition to the number of headlines surrounding the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald J. Trump, an Atlanta judge ruled on March 13 to dismiss six of the charges brought forth in the case. Scott McAfee of Fulton County Superior court ruled that six of the counts, amongst the total of 41, were non-specific in alleging that Trump and his allies pressured public officials to break the law, according to the New York Times.

The nation’s primary elections are in full swing as the country readies itself for this November’s presidential contest. Beginning in early January with Iowa and New Hampshire, primaries will continue across the 50 states until the Democratic and Republican National Conferences take place over the summer, during which delegates from both parties will select the candidate to represent them in the general election.

National security concerns may lead to TikTok ban in U.S.

The United States House of Representatives passed a bill on March 13 that gives TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, six months to divest the popular social media app or risk facing a nationwide ban, according to The Washington Post. The legislation, dubbed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, is the latest move by Washington to respond to concerns that TikTok is a threat to national security due to the app being controlled by a foreign adversary.

Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy delivered an address proposing a more consumer-friendly budget for the fiscal year 2025 in New Jersey on Feb. 27. This budget includes raised corporate taxes, raised state revenue taxes and more funding toward specific sections of the state’s infrastructure.

The Biden administration recently announced a policy mandate that would cap credit card late fees at $8, significantly lower than the current fee of $32. The policy aims to alleviate the burden of junk fees on credit card users by capping late fees at $8 starting in June, potentially saving American families more than $10 billion in late fees, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Supreme Court hears arguments for social media laws

The Supreme Court has recently been hearing oral arguments on whether to prohibit social media companies and platforms from removing posts or accounts based on content they deemed hateful. While there is still a long path before the Supreme Court arrives at its final decision, there is no doubt that the result of the decision would have a significant impact on the relationship between social media and state laws.

Paleontologists find full skeleton of 240 million year old dinosaur

The Year of the Dragon has begun, and last week, scientists found a 240 million year old “dragon” fossil. According to NPR, the fossil of the Dinocephalosaurus orientalis is from the Triassic period and was found in southern China, specifically in the Guizhou Province. This is not the first discovery of this animal but it is the first full skeleton found, with the fossil ranging 16 feet long.

Russian opposition figure, Alexei Navalny, dies in Arctic prison

Alexei Navalny, a Russian opposition figure and outspoken Kremlin critic, unexpectedly died on Feb. 16 at the Arctic prison where he was serving a 19-year prison term, according to Russia’s prison agency. The 47-year-old was one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's most prominent domestic foes and was known for his anti-corruption activism and fierce criticism of the government's policies.
