Grammy award-winning musician Moby brought the eclectic sounds of electronic music to the stage as the headliner at the second annual ULTRA.NY on Sept. 22 in New York City.
ULTRA.NY is an outdoor music festival held on Central Park's Rumsey Field that shines the light on electronic/dance music by bringing together up-and-coming musicians in the genre, as well as more established ones.
The event was sponsored by Ultra Music Festival in association with Ultra Records Inc., and featured live performances and DJ sets.
With an impressive lineup of talent such as the popular British-born DJ John Digwee, the Belgium-based band Soulwax, Junkie XL, Benny Benassi and Boris and David Waxman, the festival drew many music lovers.
About 1,000 people cheered and danced to the sounds of Soulwax when the group hit the stage at 8:30 p.m. Dressed in white, the band, made up of four men, emitted an endless amount of energy for the crowd.
Their performance was different from the other typical DJ sets people expect at electronic music events.
Instead of standing behind the DJ table and spinning a disc, they combined real instruments (a keyboard, a drum and guitars) with electronic melodies and created an interesting new sound. That sound was a fusion, creating what can only be described as electro meets pop meets alternative rock.
But the main act of the night was Moby, who returned to his career's launching pad with a unique blend of rock, alternative music, pop and, of course, electronic beats.
Angie Ling, an exchange student from Australia who is studying at the College this semester, attended the festival.
The senior journalism and business major said she enjoyed the festival a lot. "It was my first time at a music festival this big. I met different people. They were all friendly," Ling said.
Ling said she also got the opportunity to meet one of the DJs who performed at the event, Junkie XL. "He was really friendly and had the time for a quick chat."
