Editor-in-Chief Lara Becker

Lara is a senior journalism and communication studies double major at TCNJ. She joined The Signal as a contributor when she was a freshman, working her way up to reviews editor, arts & entertainment editor and managing editor. Starting off as solely a communications major, The Signal has carved a career path for her in a direction unexpected, creating a passion for writing and editing. 

She also enjoys singing with TCNJ Lyric Theatre, running, and re-watching '90s movies. Lara is so grateful for the opportunity to lead this incredible staff, and can’t wait to see what this semester has in store. 

 

Managing Editor Len La Rocca

Len is a senior journalism and professional writing major. He joined The Signal in 2019 starting off as the newspaper’s Distribution Manager. As a transfer student from Brookdale Community College, a strong work ethic is one of Len’s core values. He has covered topics from vaping to concerts to COVID-19 in his year News Editor. 

Len is excited to oversee the News, Sports and Nation & World sections as Managing Editor and is looking forward to providing the College with swift, up-to-date stories on the many uncertainties created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Managing EditorIan Krietzberg

Ian is a sophomore studying journalism and professional writing at TCNJ. He started writing for The Signal a few days after his first semester began and has since served as the Nation & World Editor, and more recently, as the Arts & Entertainment Editor. 

After a unique semester, he is incredibly excited to be overseeing the Arts & Entertainment, Features, and Opinions sections as one of the Signal's two Managing Editors.

When he's not working with the Signal, Ian can be found pursuing any of a variety of creative interests, from writing to music composition, to baking cheesecake, something he perfected while in quarantine. 

 

News Editor — Anthony Garcia

Anthony is a senior Journalism and Professional writing major with a minor in English. His involvement at The Signal started when he became the Sports editor in 2020. Most recently he is serving as editor of the news section. He is looking forward to working with the staff again this spring. 

Outside of The Signal office, he is a member of the college’s football team. When he’s not on the field he can be found pursuing his interest in music. You may also find his byline in the Star News Group newspaper where he covers local stories in and around Ocean county. 

 

News Editor — Rishi Shah

Rishi is a freshman biology major who joined The Signal as a staff writer in the beginning of the year, and will serve as a News Editor this semester. He enjoys reading about politics and government and hopes to declare a political science minor in the near future. Outside of writing for The Signal, Rishi enjoys playing tennis, drumming, and watching the Giants have a losing record year after year.

 

Features Editor Kalli Colacino

Kalli is a junior journalism and marketing double major. She joined The Signal as a freshman, and has been production manager, social media editor, opinions editor and features editor.

Outside of The Signal, Kalli loves to go hiking with her dog, watch baseball (Go Yankees) and work out. She's looking forward to her second semester as features editor for The Signal!

 

Sports Editor Liya Davidov

Liya is a junior journalism and professional writing major with a minor in creative writing. She has been involved with The Signal since her first semester at The College, working her way from assistant editor to the nation & world section, and most recently, the features section.  

When she isn’t writing, Liya can be found on the tennis courts as she plays first singles and doubles for the College’s varsity women’s tennis team. She is also a board member for multiple organizations on campus, and working two ongoing internships. 

 

Arts & Entertainment Editor Chelsie Derman

Chelsie Derman is a sophomore journalism and professional writing major with a minor in creative writing. She began writing for The Signal just a few weeks into her first semester of college, landing the spot for reviews editor in the spring and then opinions editor the following fall.

In her free time, you will find Chelsie either writing her novel or watching anything fantasy related. She is also a current member of the Tri Sigma sorority. As someone who loves anything to do with the arts, Chelsie can’t wait to start her new position as the Arts & Entertainment editor.

 

Opinions Editor Mathias Altman-Kurosaki

Mathias is a senior journalism major from New York, NY. As the youngest of five kids, Mathias credits his older siblings for helping him improve as a writer. He was the sports editor for the Fall 2020 semester. Mathias also writes and podcasts for a blog called Overtime Heroics, where he also is an editor for the baseball department. He is thrilled to be the opinions editor this coming semester. 

Away from the newsroom, Mathias is a member of The College’s Men’s Swim Team, where he specializes in distance-freestyle and butterfly. He can also be found frequently getting coffee at Wawa and eating Shake Shack. During his free time, Mathias enjoys playing wiffle ball with friends, travelling, and watching his favorite sports teams, the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Steelers. 

 

Nation & World EditorMcKenzie Collins

McKenzie Collins is a freshman english and secondary education dual major with a minor in women, gender and sexuality studies. While she joined the College with the intent to become a teacher, her work at The Signal has further sparked her interest in the pursuit of a writing career. Due to her passion for activism and politics, McKenzie is very excited to be working with such a talented staff in the Nation and World department. Her previous work includes writing for Opinions, Features, News, and Arts and Entertainment. 

In her free time, McKenzie can be found writing for the TCNJ chapter of Her Campus, fueling her Marvel obsession, or reading an abnormal amount of books. While she has yet to be integrated into traditional campus life, McKenzie is an active member of Prism, WILL and the Order of the Nose Biting Teacups. She aspires to break into the publishing field and is overjoyed to have this opportunity.

Alycia Gilb is a freshman undeclared in the school of Arts and Communication. She plans to double major in Journalism and Communication Studies. Alycia started writing for the Signal in October of her freshman year and quickly fell in love with reporting and writing. She is so excited to fill the position of reviews editor for the spring 2021 semester and hopes to grow with the Signal as she continues at the College. 

When Alycia isn’t working on pieces for the Signal or class, she loves to spend time with her girlfriend, family, and her four dogs. She also loves to go on long drives so she can sing in the car.

 
 

Web Editor  — Sterly Deracy

Sterly's experience with websites started his freshman year of high school, where he created a new website for the local robotics team and for the school. He enjoyed doing this kind of work, so he researched the tools needed for the web development industry and dove into the world of freelance. Not every website is built the same, and so this always provides a fun challenge with each customer. Sterly has never worked with a newspaper site, so he is eager for the experience that this will bring. He will ensure that The Signal is running smoothly with the latest technologies.

 

Photo Editor — Darby VanDeVeen

Darby VanDeVeen is a senior Marketing major with a minor in Communications. She is very excited to continue taking photos for The Signal this semester. Darby is also heavily involved in CUB and is on the varsity swim team. She also works in the athletic department on campus. 

Darby loves going to concerts and hopes to work in the music industry upon graduation this spring. She also enjoys iced tea, bad reality television and traveling.

 

Video Editor— Marlea Maltz

Marlea is a senior international studies major minoring in public health. She became involved with The Signal in the spring of 2019 as a video editor. She is excited to create more content to give students a voice on campus. She also hopes to give students extra tips for around campus and to promote different TCNJ clubs and organizations. Marlea is an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority and outside of her classes and schoolwork, she enjoys painting, listening to music and reading up on the local news.

 

Social Media Editor — Gabby Servis

Gabby is a junior psychology major with a minor in marketing. She recently transferred to The College of New Jersey this fall and is very eager to get involved on campus! Gabby hopes to gain practical experience from The Signal, as she is interested in pursuing Marketing and Social Media as a career. She previously worked as a Digital Marketing Intern and has additional experience managing multiple social media accounts and creating eye-catching campaigns. 

Outside of her studies, Gabby can be found shopping at the mall, drinking iced coffee, and watching sports. She is a diehard Kansas City Chiefs fan, which is unique for someone who has lived in New Jersey her entire life. Gabby also has a strong passion for photography and design, which corresponds with her career interests.

 

Business Manager — Brandon Schoch

Brandon Schoch is a sophomore studying Economics and Finance at TCNJ. He began working for The Signal in 2020, joining the team as Business Manager. As a new addition to the paper, he strives to create an immediate positive impact, helping the group achieve its goals. 

Outside of working for the Signal, Brandon takes a stark interest in climate literacy, nutrition, and physical fitness. When finding time to relax, Brandon plays with his dogs, watches hours of NFL football (Go Jets), and spends time with family and friends.

 
 
The Signal is also created with the help of its editorial and photo assistants, as well as many staff writers, columnists, staff photographers and correspondents who work every week to deliver the news to The College of New Jersey community.
