The College’s field hockey team held off William Smith College at home on Sept. 19 to secure their second home win of the season.
The Lions desperately needed a win at home after sliding in their last two away games. The team was outscored 2-6 against Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore in back-to-back games, a break from their first stretch of games. The Lions had only allowed one goal while posting six of their own. The team desperately needed to pick up a win at home, and that they did.
The Lions started off strong, scoring their first goal of the game just one minute into the game. Sophomore Lindsey Hoffman picked up her first goal of the season, with junior Nika Eschmann providing the assist.
The Lions defense held off the Herons for the entire first period, not allowing a single shot on goal. The second period was more of the same, as the Herons were only able to get three shots off, with graduate Brigitte Racey picking up a save in goal.
Coming out of the half, the Lions continued to apply pressure as senior Isabel Maher was able to pick up her second goal of the season to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Maher has now scored in the last two games and looks to continue that streak. She was assisted by junior Rachel Tetzlaff, who picked up her first assist of the season.
Each team traded blows as the game marched on into the fourth period, with three shots recorded respectively. Racey picked up another save in the exchange, bringing her total to three on the day.
William Smith tried to swing the momentum in the fourth period, taking two shots on three penalty corners in the first two minutes of the period. The Herons were able to find a break, picking up their first goal six minutes in.
William and Smith desperately tried to find their equalizer, even going as far as to pull their goalie with two minutes left in the game. The Lions defense held firm, however, as they were able to limit the Herons to just one shot despite being outmanned.
The Lions are now 2-0 at home and find themselves sitting at No. 20 in the rankings. The Lions are set to face off against Lebanon Valley in Ewing on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. in hopes of extending their home win-streak to three.
