With the regular season drawing to a close, the men’s and women’s teams finished in impressive fashion, winning three of their combined four matches over the last week. The men went 1-1, and the women finished with two wins.
In the last week of their season, the men shut out Franklin and Marshall College on Sunday, April 19, but fell to Stevens Institute of Technology, 6-3, a week later.
The match against Franklin and Marshall was the Lions’ final regular season home match. Prior to the match, the team honored senior Ezra Klemow for his dedication to the team and his leadership throughout his career. The current members of the team all signed a poster and compiled a photo album for Klemow, and he played an exhibition singles match which didn’t count toward the match score.
“I had a lot of mixed feelings at the last home match,” Klemow said. “I was definitely sad that it was over, but all of the things my teammates did for me that day made it incredibly memorable.”
Across the two matches, juniors Pierce Cooper and Billy Buchbinder and sophomore Jack August were the only players to post victories in both of their singles matches. None of the doubles teams pulled out two victories over the two matches.
The men’s team finished the year with an 11-3 record with seven wins being shutouts. The team must now wait until Monday, May 4, to find out if they will continue their season and play in the NCAA D-III tournament.
Like the men’s team, the women’s team disposed of Franklin and Marshall on the same day by a score of 8-1. However, unlike the men, the women earned a victory in their final match of the season, defeating St. Lawrence University, 7-2.
Over the two matches, the women were a perfect 6-0 in the doubles rounds, with only one of the doubles matches going to a tiebreaker. In addition, four of the six singles players posted 2-0 records this week: junior Emma Allen, sophomores Katie Buchbinder and Anna Prestera and freshman Maddy Stoner.
“(These were) huge wins for us, two teams that beat us a year ago,” Coach Scott DiCheck said. “I think it’s the best we’ve played this season.”
The women finished their season with an impressive 14-1 record on the tail of a five-match winning streak. Back in the fall season, they won the New Jersey Athletic Conference title. This title clinched them a spot in the NCAA D-III tournament, and just like the men, the field for the women will be announced on Monday, May 4, at 12 p.m. on www.ncaa.com.

Both of the College’s tennis teams had successful weeks with each winning both of their matches. The men and women both defeated Ithaca College while the women added a victory over New York University and the men overcame Muhlenberg College.
Against Ithaca and Muhlenberg, the men only surrendered one match in their 8-1 and 9-0 victories, respectively. In addition to the impressive play, one Lion reached an impressive milestone against Muhlenberg. Junior Pierce Cooper, playing both No. 1 singles and doubles in the match, earned his 99th and 100th career collegiate individual victories. In the doubles match, Cooper and junior Billy Buchbinder doubled up their Muhlenberg opponents, 8-4. Then, in the singles round, Cooper shut out his opponent, grabbing his 100th win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Also claiming a successful week, sophomore Jack August completed two individual match shutouts between his Ithaca and Muhlenberg opponents. Against Ithaca, August won his No. 2 singles match by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Then, against Muhlenberg, August and doubles partner sophomore Mike Stanley shut out their No. 2 doubles opponents 8-0.
These two wins bump the Lions’ record up to 10-2 and got them back to their winning ways. They will play again on Wednesday, April 22, against Stevens Institute of Technology, which will be their final regular season match.
The women’s team had two relatively close matches this week, defeating Ithaca, 7-2, and doubling up NYU, 6-3.
Against Ithaca, junior Victoria Michels, along with junior Jasmine Muniz-Cadorette, lost the No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-1. However, in the singles portion of the match, Muniz-Cadorette shook off the doubles loss and a losing first set of 4-6 to emerge victorious, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
“Having a doubles loss only means that now we get one more chance to win a point for the team,” Muniz-Cadorette said. “We will work even harder than in doubles to be able to claim a point for the team.”
Across the two matches, freshman Maddy Stoner and Brittany Reedman each recorded 4-0 records between doubles and singles. The two teamed up in both matches to play No. 2 doubles and earned a win for the College in both of them. Individually, Reedman and Stoner only surrendered nine games over their two matches and four sets on their way to their singles victories.
With these wins, the women’s team improved to 11-1 on the season and are undefeated in eight matches at home. The women will return to the courts on Sunday, April 26, and will face St. Lawrence University.
. “Because at the end of the day, the win not only means something to me but means something to the team, as well.”
With the loss to Skidmore, the women’s undefeated season came to an end, dropping them to 9-1 overall. They will be back in action on Wednesday, April 15, against New York University.

This week, the men’s tennis team finished with a win and a loss as the Lions defeated the Wilkes University Colonels on Monday, April 6, by a score of 9-0 and lost to the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds on Saturday, April 11, with a score of 6-3.
Five of the six singles players who started both matches for the Lions finished the week with a 1-1 record. Sophomore Mike Stanley was the only Lion player to come out of the week with a perfect record, having secured two wins each in singles and doubles. In his singles matches, Stanley only dropped four games over four sets. Stanley and fellow sophomore and doubles partner Jack August won both of their matches at No. 2 doubles, each by scores of 8-6. Freshmen Chris D’Agostino and Sean Fernandez also had two wins in doubles during the week. They defeated their Wilkes opponents with a score of 8-5, and their match with Skidmore ended at 9-7.
The loss to Skidmore ended the team’s eight-game winning streak. The men’s team is now 8-2 on the season. The women’s team experienced similar results, finishing the week with a win and a loss. The women earned a 9-0 victory over Muhlenberg College on Thursday, April 9, but fell to Skidmore College by the same score.
Sophomore Anna Prestera only surrendered one game in her No. 5 singles match versus Muhlenburg and forced her match against Skidmore to three sets, losing a close match with 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Freshman Maddy Stoner also had a relatively successful week. Against Muhlenberg, Stoner was victorious, recording a 6-0, 6-2 win. In her match against Skidmore, Stoner was defeated but sent the match to three sets. After winning the first set, 6-4, she lost the second in a close tiebreaker by a score of 9-7. In the third set super-tiebreak, Stoner lost 10-4, but the fight through three sets was impressive enough, even without a win at the end.
“I always tell myself to keep fighting no matter what is happening,” Stoner said. “Because at the end of the day, the win not only means something to me but means something to the team, as well.”
With the loss to Skidmore, the women’s undefeated season came to an end, dropping them to 9-1 overall.

The College’s men’s and women’s tennis teams were both active this past week, and each team went undefeated in their matches. The men defeated all three of their opponents, crushing Kutztown University, 9-0, on Wednesday, March 25; Hobart College, 9-0, on Saturday, March 28; and University of Rochester, 6-3, on Sunday, March 29.
Junior Pierce Cooper won all three of his No. 1 singles matches this week, twice dropping the first set and fighting back to claim the victory. Cooper and fellow junior and doubles partner Billy Buchbinder were also undefeated in their three, No. 1 doubles matches, winning each in impressive fashion.
Sophomore Mike Stanley and freshmen Sean Fernandez and Chris D’Agostino also went undefeated in their three singles matches this week, playing sixth, fourth and fifth singles, respectively. The freshman duo also finished 2-1 in doubles this week, losing a close match to University of Rochester. Stanley — along with his partner, sophomore Jack August — completed the sweep this week in the second doubles spot.
“We’ve been working hard in the weight room, and we’ve been working hard on the courts,” coach Scott Dicheck said about matches on back-to-back days. “That’s why you do all that training.”
The men are now 5-1 on the season. They will return to the courts on Wednesday, April 1, against New York University at 3 p.m.
In addition to the men’s success, the women’s team also won all of their matches this week, defeating William Smith College, 6-3, on Saturday, March 28, and University of Rochester, 6-3, on Sunday, March 29.
Saturday was the spring opener for the women, and they came out ready to win. The team’s depth played a large role in the victory over William Smith. While the Lions lost in the top matches of both singles and doubles, they were successful in the other matches, winning the remaining two doubles matches and securing victories in four of the remaining five singles matches.
Another freshman duo was important for the women’s team to get the win. Brittany Reedman and Maddy Stoner each won their singles matches and then teamed up to claim a victory at second doubles. Together, they secured three points for the Lions, equivalent to the margin of victory in the overall match.
The women were in action again the next day, playing the second half of a double match against the University of Rochester along with the men’s team. The Lions matched the men’s success and topped Rochester, 6-3.
Once again the women fell behind early, losing the first singles match. Their depth picked up four victories in the singles matches to take a 4-2 lead after the singles portion of the match.
The women went on to secure two wins in the doubles round behind victories by Reedman and Stoner at No. 2 doubles and juniors Jasmine Muniz-Cadorette and Emma Allen at No. 1.
“We played two good teams,” Dicheck said. “We felt like we had a good chance of beating them if we played the way we’ve been practicing, and (our girls) came out and just played as well as we had hoped.”
The win improved the women’s record to 7-0 dating back to the fall season. They will be in action again on Friday, April 3, against Swarthmore College at 4 p.m.

Coming off a close loss last week, the Lions came roaring back against the Ramapo College Roadrunners with a 9-0 home win on Wednesday, March 4.
The Lions started off hot in the doubles round, picking up victories in all three matches. On their way to these victories, the Lions only conceded seven total games. At No. 1 doubles, juniors Pierce Cooper and Billy Buchbinder had to grind out the first few games but ultimately pulled out an 8-2 victory and put the College up 1-0 early.
“In the beginning of the match, Ramapo was serving well,” Cooper said. “After (Buchbinder) and I broke them in a close game early on, we got a lot of momentum that carried through the rest of the match.”
The No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Jack August and Mike Stanley extended the Lions’ lead with their own, 8-2 victory. Closing out the Lions’ sweep of the doubles round, freshmen Sean Fernandez and Chris D’Agostino were victorious at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-3.
The Lions’ success spilled over into the singles round where, once again, the Lions won all six matches. Playing No. 1 singles, Cooper double-bageled his opponent, winning by a score of 6-0, 6-0. August, playing in the No. 2 spot, defeated his opponent handily at 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Buchbinder earned a close first-set victory and came back to take the second set decisively, ending with a final score of 6-4, 6-1. Playing No. 4 singles, D’Agostino pulled off a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win. Both finishing with 6-1, 6-0 scores, Fernandez and Stanley earned victories at the fifth and sixth spots, respectively.
“I did feel some sort of pressure in the beginning, but at this point, it’s all really in the back of my head,” Fernandez said regarding the stress of being a freshman in the starting lineup. “I come onto the courts not worrying that I am a freshman but just thinking about what I have to do to win the match.”
With this victory, the Lions improve to 2-1 on the season. The team is now beginning a three-week break that will extend until they return to the courts on Wednesday, March 25, to host the Division-II Kutztown University Golden Bears at 3 p.m.

In their first match of the season, the Lions men’s tennis team posted an impressive win after defeating Vassar College by a score of 9-0 on Saturday, Feb. 14. The College swept both doubles and singles in this match to take all nine points.
“We need not just a win,” said coach Scott Dicheck to his team after going up 3-0 after the doubles round. “We want to put on a dominating performance.”
The Lions did indeed put on such a dominating performance. The top doubles pair of sophomores Pierce Cooper and Billy Buchbinder defeated their opponents 8-6, while the second doubles pair and fellow sophomores Jack August and Jason Prezant earned a victory of 8-5. To cap the Lions’ sweep of the doubles matches, freshmen Chris D’Agostino and Sean Fernandez were victorious by a score of 9-7.
The Lions’ success continued into the singles round. At first singles, Cooper dispatched his opponent 6-3, 6-1. August, playing No. 2 singles, fought back after losing the first set to defeat his opponent 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-6. Buchbinder defeated his No. 3 opponent 6-2, 6-3. No. 4 singles was another close match and, after dropping the first set and climbing back, D’Agostino came out on top 4-6, 7-5, 10-5. Fernandez made short work of his opponent at No. 5 singles, winning impressively by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
The No. 6 singles match was the last match to finish, and it came down to the wire. Junior Dan Presuto won the first set 6-4 but consequently dropped the second set 0-6. With all members of both teams looking on, Presuto and his opponent moved on to a super tiebreak: first to 10 points wins, but it must be by two points. The two players traded serves and points but ultimately, it was Presuto coming out triumphant, by a score of 10-7.
“You got to block out what happened negatively in that second set,” said DiCheck about how he coached Presuto going into the super tiebreaker. “We were able to win the supers by kind of blocking out any of the past negative stuff.”
With this victory, the Lions start the season with a record of 1-0 and look to build on this win as the season goes on. The team is back in action next Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. in the Rec Center, where they will host the Dickinson College Red Devils.

The past few wrestling matches have been up and down for the Lions, and when they travelled to Wilkes University on Friday, Feb. 6, it was mostly down. The Lions only won three weight classes on their way to a 27-12 defeat at the hands of the Colonels.
Going into the match, the Lions were out-ranked by their opponents, ranking as the 25th Division III team in the country while the Colonels boasted 11th.
Wilkes wrestled like the better team early on, taking four of the first five weight classes to build a sizeable lead. However, the Lions won the 197 weight class in dominant fashion.
Sophomore Dan Wojtaszek won his class by fall when he pinned his opponent at just 4:46. With the win, Wojtaszek improved to 7-2 on the season.
The Lions gained some ground on the Colonels, as they were victorious in two of the next three weight classes. Freshman Ryan Budzek defeated his opponent at 141 by a score of 10-4. Two classes later, junior Antonio Mancella earned a 12-5 decision at 157.
The Lions then dropped the final two weight classes, making the final score 27-12 in favor of Wilkes University.
Notably absent from the Lions’ lineup was senior Zach Zotollo, the top-ranked, D-III wrestler at 174. Zotollo is 14-0 on the season but has not wrestled since Saturday, Jan. 31, when the College hosted the Metro/New England Duals.
The Lions will return to the mat on Friday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Doylestown, P.A. to take on Delaware Valley College. The Delaware Valley Aggies are the eighth-ranked, D-III wrestling team in the nation, so the Lions will be up against a strong program.
“We come to practice and work hard,” coach Joe Galante said in regards to the team’s preparation this week. “Each and every opponent is difficult in a different way.”
The Lions will then be back at The College on Saturday, Feb. 14, to face Messiah College at 7 p.m. in Packer Hall.

The Lions’ winning streak came to an end on Saturday, Jan. 31 when the College hosted the annual Metro/New England Duals. The College wrestled against three teams: Bridgewater State University, 14th-ranked Roger Williams University and 27th-ranked Williams College.
The Lions came out strong with an early 45-3 win over the Bridgewater Bears. The College only lost one weight class. That class, however, was not 174, where senior Zach Zotollo continued his incredible season by extending his undefeated record to 13-0.
After taking that decisive victory, the Lions were not as successful against their two ranked opponents. Against Roger Williams University, the Lions won at 125, 149 and 174. With their wins, junior Dylan Thorsen and Zotollo each ended the day with 2-0 records.
“Losing focus should never be an issue,” Zotollo said in regards to staying focused after falling behind. “Every guy has worked hard and prepared well, so regardless of what the team score is, each wrestler’s job is to stay focused on winning their match.”
In their final match of the day, the Lions were defeated by Williams College by a score of 21-15. This match also saw two more Lions wrestlers improve to 2-0 on the day: sophomores Kevin Corrigan and Dan Wojtaszek.
The next day, the Lions were once again in action, as they took on the Springfield College Pride. The College was victorious by a score of 19-18. After all the weight classes had finished, the match was tied 18-18. This forced the match to be decided by criteria. Each team won five weight classes and each had one victory by fall. This brought the fate of the match down to total points scored, in which the Lions eked out the Pride 45-44. This gave the Lions the extra point and the win.
Freshman Ryan Budzek started off the match with a victory at 141, but the Lions proceeded to drop the next three weight classes and fall behind 9-3. However, the Lions struck back with wins at 174 and 184 by freshman Kellen Whitney and Wojtaszek, respectively, to come back and tie Springfield at 9-9.
After a pin by Springfield at 197, the College took back the lead with wins by senior Nathaniel Leer and Kevin Corrigan. The match ended with a Springfield win at 133 that tied the score and forced the match to be decided by criteria.
The Lions will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 6, when they travel to Willes-Barre, PA to take on Wilkes University.
