Over the course of the three-day weekend, the women’s tennis team ventured out to Geneva, N.Y., to close out its phenomenal season in the multi-day ITA Northeast Regional Championship tournament and did not fail to impress in this highly-competitive tournament.
The Lions had four singles players and two duos qualify for the tournament with much success throughout the weekend as the team managed to win games in both brackets. Sophomore Jasmine Muniz-Cadorrete and freshman Katie Buchbinder made it to the round of 16 in the singles bracket, while the team of sophomore Emma Allen and senior Tara Criscuolo made it to the round of 16 in the doubles bracket.
Buchbinder came into the tournament as the number three seed in the bracket and did not fail to live up to expectations. Buchbinder defeated her first two opponents in only two sets: 6-2, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-1.
It was only in the round of 16 where Buchbinder lost her first set by a score of 6-4. After rallying back to take the second set 6-3, her tournament ended with a 6-2 decision.
Muniz-Cadorette made a similar run in the singles bracket, defeating her first two opponents in straight sets: 6-2, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-1.
But Muniz-Cadorette fell short in her round of 16 matchup, dropping her first set 7-6 and seeing her championship hopes end with a 6-1 defeat in the second.
Allen and Criscuolo earned their way into the round of 16 for the doubles bracket with an 8-2 win in their tourament opener and fought tooth-and-nail in a doubles grudge match but fell short of advancing.
After holding strong down the stretch, Allen and Criscuolo were eventually taken over, losing a close match 9-7 in extra games.
The women’s tennis team dominated their division this semester as they always have and closed their season out on a strong note. Much is in store for the future of the team as it enters its break for the year. But one thing is for sure: Come next season, the Lions are going to come out swinging.

Almost nothing comes quite as close to the thrill of a season-ending tournament. The practice leading up to the weekend, the atmosphere and the sheer excitement — which has to be contained by the players — make it a truly fantastic experience beyond compare.
The men’s tennis team got the opportunity to experience this first hand, closing out their fall season as they traveled to Ithaca, N.Y. to square off against some of the best players in the region at the ITA Northeast Regional. This three-day tournament featured a singles competition consisting of 64 competitors and a doubles tournament showcasing 32 teams.
Among the top performers from the College in singles play were senior Howard Telson and sophomore Pierce Cooper. Both players represented the Lions squad well, winning their way through the first two rounds of the singles bracket with ease. After making it to the round of 16, both of their runs came to an end.
In addition to Telson and Cooper, sophomore Billy Buchbinder also managed to make his way through the first round. Buchbinder stormed back into his first match after losing the first set and pulled out the win, but was eliminated just before the round of 16.
The participants in the doubles play from the Lions side was the duo of Telson and Buchbinder, as well as the duo of Cooper and freshman Mike Stanley. Both duos put forth formidable outings on the weekend, winning their way past the first round of the bracket with ease.
In the round of 16, the duo of Telson and Buchbinder fell in a close match against a pair from the University of Rochester. Cooper and Stanley, however, made their way through this stage, defeating their opponent 8-4 and earning themselves a spot in the quarterfinal matches.
The duo then faced off against a pair from the Steven’s Institute of Technology in a match that was neck and neck the entire time. After toughing it out for the weekend, Cooper and Stanley finally fell to the Stevens duo in a tiebreaker, closing out their tournament hopes with a score of 9-8.
While the men were participating in the ITA Northeast Regional, the women’s team hosted a plethora of matches on campus. The matchups over the three-day weekend for the women had them facing off against Ramapo College, Rutgers-Newark, William Paterson University and Rutgers-Camden.
On Friday, Sept. 20, in their face-off against Ramapo, the Lions came out of the gate on fire. The team didn’t even allow their opponents to take a single game in nine out of the 15 sets, winning the match by a score of 9-0 and dealing Ramapo their first loss of the season.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Lions were looking at a doubleheader, playing Rutgers-Newark in the morning and William Paterson in the afternoon. In the match versus Rutgers-Newark, the women were only one game away from a perfect match, shutting out the opponent in 14 of the 15 matchups. The Lions easily picked up the match 9-0.
Next up was William Paterson, who put up a challenging effort against the women. The match featured several close doubles sets, but the Lions eventually came out on top, winning the match 7-2. Last on the plate for the red-hot team was Rutgers-Camden, who were no challenge for the women. They wrapped up the match with no difficulty, winning 9-0.
Since 1982 and the sponsoring of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the Lions team has claimed every conference title, and this year was no different. The women eased their way to winning their 31st straight conference title. They only have their three-day ITA Northeast Regional tournament left on the schedule, starting next Friday, Sept. 27.

The College’s women’s tennis team soared its way to a 150-game conference win streak on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Richard Stockton College, defeating the Ospreys in a typically convincing fashion while dropping only one set on the day in an 8-1 decision.
The top doubles pairing for the Lions (2-0), sophomore Jasmine Muniz-Cadorette and freshman Katie Buchbinder, made quick work of their opponents in a 8-3 win to propel their record to 5-0. The team won all points but the sixth singles spot, boding well ahead of a plethora of matches coming in the next few weeks.
The New Jersey Athletic Conference win keeps the Lions undefeated in conference play, going back more than 30 years, keeping them in good form before a jam-packed weekend, which includes matches with Ramapo College, Rutgers-Newark, William Paterson and Rutgers-Camden.
The women also participated with the men’s tennis team on Saturday and Sunday, hosting the annual Lions’ Fall Tournament versus New York University. The tournament featured a mixture of singles and doubles play over the course of the weekend.
Not only did the tournament feature the tennis teams, but it also brought along some brisk fall weather with it, dropping the morning temperature and providing an ample amount of wind. This weather proceeded through both days of the match-up and forced teams on both sides of the court to make adjustments to their playing styles.
Buchbinder and freshman Anna Prestera both won each of their singles matches for the tournament. Buchbinder managed to bounce back from a first-set loss against her number one opponent to win the final two sets 6-1 and 6-2, earning a win for the match, and made quick work of her second opponent with a pair of victorious 6-2 sets.
Meanwhile, Prestera showed a dominating performance in the tournament, dropping only two games out of her entire four singles sets, winning two of them 6-0 and two of them 6-1. Both Prestera and Buchbinder went on to win doubles sets on the day as well. The women’s team overall won seven singles matches, as well as three doubles sets.
On the men’s side, the charge was led by senior Howard Telson and sophomore Dan Presuto, who went undefeated in singles play for the tournament. Telson and Presuto both made easy work of their opponents, winning all four of their singles matches in only two sets.
Senior Gabe Allen also picked up a major win in singles play during the tournament weekend, playing through an extended game to defeat his opponent in the final set by a score of 11-9. Over the course of the tournament, the men’s team picked up six singles matches and three doubles matches.
