By Christine Houghton Sports Editor The women’s lacrosse team dominated in the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship after a convincing playoff run. The Lions defeated Kean University on May 1 in a blowout 18-4 victory. They then went on to beat Rowan University in the championship match on Saturday, May 4, winning 17-2. The score was tight in the game against Kean until just under 15 minutes into the first half. The Lions, then down by one, rallied with a 15-goal-scoring run that lasted the rest of the game, only letting Kean hit the back of the net four times. Junior attacker Alexandria Fitzpatrick scored a game high of five goals throughout both halves, increasing her season total to 59 goals. Junior attackers Olivia Cleale and Kasey Donoghue both scored three each and graduate student midfielder Erin Harvey found the back of the net twice. After the dominant victory, the Lions went on to play Rowan and secured the 2019 NJAC women’s lacrosse title, their ninth title in club history. Fitzpatrick was the top scorer yet again, posting up four goals and becoming the first player to pass the 60-goal mark since 2015. Senior midfielder Kathleen Jaeger also scored four goals on the day and junior attacker Allie Gorman posted three herself. Harvey rounded out the top scorers yet again with two goals, while senior goalkeeper Miranda Chrone saved 11 goals on the day to help the College secure its championship victory. With the win, the team has clinched a playoff berth in the upcoming NCAA playoff berth as they play Colby College on Sunday, May 12.
By Christine Houghton Sports Editor The lacrosse team capped off the regular season with two impressive conference wins. On April 23 the College steamrolled past Stockton University buy a final score of 18-4. On Saturday, April 27, the team went up Kean University and won 14-5. To start the first game, the Lions went on a six-goal scoring streak, starting with an unassisted goal by junior attacker Alexandria Fitzpatrick less than a minute in. Before Stockton even scored once, Fitzpatrick had hit the net once more, junior attacker Kasey Donoghue put up two goals and senior midfielder Kathleen Jaeger and junior attacker Allie Gorman each scored once. Junior attacker Olivia Cleale assisted three of those goals. After one response goal by Stockton to make the score 6-1 in favor of the College, the team then went on a five-goal scoring run leading right up to halftime. Cleale scored first with an unassisted goal and assisted the next two goals scored by Donoghue and junior defender Jessica Allen. Donoghue would score again, followed by Fitzpatrick, whose last first-half goal put the team up 11-1. Cleale opened up the second half by scoring yet again, as she led a three-score run capped off by Donoghue and sophomore midfielder Erin Jaffe. Scoring went back-and-forth constantly, as both graduate student midfielder Erin Harvey and Jaeger scored once and Fitzpatrick scored twice. Against Kean, the College celebrated Senior Day, as seniors Jaeger, defender Abby Flagler, goalkeeper Miranda Chrone and Harvey were honored. The Lions finished ahead by nine after answering every Kean goal with at least one of their own. Donoghue found the back of the net four times on the day and Jaeger was the high scorer of the game with six goals. Ranked 17th in Division III NCAA women’s lacrosse, the College finished the season 11-5 overall and undefeated 6-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. As the No. 1 seed Lions will go on to play Kean University in the NJAC tournament tonight at 7 p.m.
By Christine Houghton Sports Editor The lacrosse team faced a trio of opponents this past week, starting with Rowan University on the road on April 16. The Lions team then played two home games against Colorado College on Thursday, April 18 and Ramapo College on Saturday, April 20. Going up against Rowan, the College topped the New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent 17-11 and extended its conference winning streak to a national long 62 games. Junior midfielder Alexandria Fitzpatrick scored a team high of six goals and junior attacker Olivia Cleale followed in second with four goals on the day. Two days later, the home game against Colorado ended in a 15-9 win for the Lions. Junior attacker Kasey Donoghue scored early to put the College on the board first. After a response by Colorado, Fitzpatrick came back with repeated goals merely seconds apart, putting the team up 3-1. About two minutes later, Cleale scored her first of the game and Fitzpatrick followed soon after with her third goal on the day. Senior midfielder Kathleen Jaeger scored the College’s sixth goal unassisted and graduate student midfielder Erin Harvey followed suit with a goal of her own, sending the Lions into halftime up 7-4. After halftime, the College showed no mercy, as it held Colorado to five goals on the half. Fitzpatrick started the team off with an unassisted strike and Harvey followed just the same five minutes later. Jaeger scored back-to-back goals seconds apart to propel the College to an 11-5 lead. Junior midfielder Allie Gorman scored off the first assist of the game for the Lions by Cleale, while junior defender Jessica Allen scored the 13th goal off an assist by Jaeger. Harvey scored the final two goals for the Lions, closing the score with the six-point victory. On Saturday, April 20, the team rolled passed NJAC opponent Ramapo College by a score of 18-3. The Lions opened the game strong with back-to-back goals by Gorman and Cleale, moving the team up 2-0 on the scoreboard. After a response by Ramapo, the College went on a 10-goal streak that went unanswered in the first half, which was highlighted by three goals from Jaeger and two from Harvey. Opening the second half, Jaeger scored one of her two post-halftime goals and was followed suit by Cleale, who scored off an assist by Harvey. Donoghue scored the first of the last four goals for the Lions after a two-score rally by Ramapo, followed by Jaeger’s fifth goal on the day and two scores by Fitzpatrick to close out the game. The Lions return to the field on Saturday, April 27, when they take on Kean University at home.
By Christine Houghton Sports Editor Taking to the road this past week, the College’s lacrosse team was successful against both Rutgers University-Camden on Tuesday, April 9 and Salisbury University on Saturday, April 13. Rutgers-Camden proved to be no match for the team, as it fell to the Lions 20-2. Less than half a minute into the game, the College started putting up a tally that would result in a 13-1 lead going into halftime. Junior attacker Kasey Donoghue scored first off an assist by junior attacker Olivia Cleale. About two minutes later, Cleale offered her help again, this time to junior midfielder Allie Gorman, and the pair put the Lions up 2-0. In the first half, Cleale would score three times. Donoghue, junior midfielder Alexandria Fitzpatrick and junior defender Jessica Allen contributed two of their own goals while Gorman and sophomore midfielder Erin Jaffe both added one. Coming back from the half with a 12-point lead, the Lions were anything but merciful as they continued their scoring run. Junior attacker Talia Bouzakis started the scoring run off with an unassisted goal. Jaeger found the net twice, while Gorman and freshman attacker Emma Karnitsky had a goal each. Graduate student midfielder Erin Harvey contributed two goals in the second half, with her last one closing out the game for the Lions. On Saturday, April 13, the Lions traveled to Salisbury where they unfortunately fell 8-7. In response to an early two goals by Salisbury, the Lions went on a four-goal scoring run with Donoghue scoring two, one assisted by Jaeger, and both Harvey and Fitzpatrick scoring one. The game would be tied 4-4 going into halftime. In the second half, Donoghue scored once, assisted by Fitzpatrick, while Cleale scored twice unassisted. The Lions return to the field on Thursday, April 18, when they take on Colorado College at home.
By Christine Houghton Sports Editor It was a busy week for the Lions as men's tennis took on both Rutgers University-Newark and Camden in a doubleheader on April 10, the University of Rochester on Saturday, April 13 and Goucher College on Sunday, April 14. The women went up against Rochester on Friday, April 12 and then Rensselaer Polytech Institute on Saturday, April 13. Going up against Rutgers-Newark, the College shut out its opponent 9-0, sweeping all singles and doubles matches. Against Rutgers-Camden, the team produced the same shutout result, winning yet again 9-0 and the NJAC conference title. With four wins on the day, a singles and doubles match against each opponent, senior Tim Gavornik was able to hit 100 career wins. On Friday, April 12 the women’s team took on Rochester at home and went on to win 6-3. The team swept all three doubles matches and won three out of six singles matches. Junior Audrey Chen and seniors Grace Minassian and Alyssa Baldi won their singles matches in two sets each. The next day, the men’s team took on Rochester and won by a score of 6-3 as well. Following the women’s match to a T, the team swept its doubles matches and took half of the singles matches. Seniors Mitchel Sanders and Matt Puig won both their singles matches in two sets and freshman Matthew Michibata won his in three sets. On Saturday, April 13, the women went head-to-head with Rensselaer, winning the match 8-1. The team of freshmen Liya Davidov and Katrine Luddy came out with an 8-6 doubles win. Minassian and Baldi took their doubles match 8-4 and the pair of Chen and freshman Sarah Phung also won its match 8-4. Davidov, Chen and freshman Navya Yemula all won their singles matches in two sets. Davidov won 6-1 and 6-2, Chen was victorious 6-2 and 7-6 and Yemula closed out the match 6-1 and 6-3. Luddy and Baldi came out on top in their singles matches in three sets each, with Luddy’s final set being 10-8 and Baldi’s being 6-1. The next day, the men’s team took on Goucher at home, resulting in an 8-1 win and a full sweep of all matches by both teams. The team was able to sweep all three doubles doubles matches and five out of six of its singles matches. Gavornik and Michibata won their doubles match by a score of 8-5 and the team of Sanders and junior Gokul Murugesan won 8-2. Closing out doubles, Puig and sophomore Andrew Mok took their match 8-6. Michibata, Gavornik and senior Achyuth Balijepalle all took their singles matches in two sets. Michibata won both sets 6-1, followed by Gavornik taking his match 7-6 and 6-2. Balijepalle closed out the match, winning his sets 6-3 and 7-5. Freshman Justin Wain and Puig both came out on top in their singles matches after three sets each. Wain won his final two sets with a 6-0 shutout and and Puig won his final set 6-3. The Lions return to the court April 24, as the men take on Stevens Institute of Technology. The women will face Haverford College on April 26.
By Christine Houghton Sports Editor On Saturday, April 6 the lacrosse team managed to snap its three-game losing streak with a New Jersey Athletic Conference win against Montclair State University. During the game’s opening half, the College was able to propel itself to a 7-0 lead over Montclair State. Scoring first, junior attacker Talia Bouzakis found the back of the net off an assist from junior attacker Olivia Cleale. Thirty-two seconds later, junior midfielder Alexandria Fitzpatrick put the Lions ahead by two and Cleale followed soon after with a goal of her own. Graduate student midfielder Erin Harvey put another point on the board off an assist from Fitzpatrick and senior midfielder Kathleen Jaeger scored the College’s next two goals unassisted. Fitzpatrick closed out the half putting the Lions up by seven off an assist by Bouzakis. With her two goals in the first half, Jaeger upped her career total to 141, which moves her to the 21st spot in the program’s history for goals scored. To begin the second half, Bouzakis and Cleale both found the net to score their second goals of the game with Bouzakis being assisted by Cleale. Junior attacker Kasey Donoghue put the Lions up by 10 with an unassisted goal. She then scored again after a Montclair State goal. Fitzpatrick then scored her third and fourth goals in quick succession with Jaeger assisting the fourth. After Montclair State went on a two-goal rally, junior midfielder Allie Gorman scored the game’s final point for the Lions in a drastic 14-3 victory. After improving to 5-4 on the season, the Lions return to the field Tuesday, April 9 as they take on Rutgers University-Camden and Saturday, April 13 as they take on Salisbury University.
By Christine Houghton Sports Editor The men’s and women’s tennis teams had a busy weekend, taking on Ithaca College on Saturday, April 6 and North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday, April 7. On the first day, both teams faced Ithaca College and won their matches by final scores of 8-1. The men’s team started strong, sweeping all doubles matches by landslide scores. Leading off for the Lions, the team of freshman Matthew Michibata and senior Tim Gavornik won by a score of 8-1. Senior Mitchel Sanders and junior Thomas Wright won 8-2 and senior Matt Puig and sophomore Andrew Mok came out on top 8-5 to close out doubles matches. In the singles play, the College won five out of six matches with the majority being won in two sets. Sanders topped his opponent in two sets, 6-2 and 6-0. Michibata followed by winning in three sets with the final one being 10-6. Freshman Justin Wain took his match in two sets, 6-1 and 6-0. Puig also won his match in two sets, both of them 6-1. Wright closed out the match with a win in two sets, 6-0 and 6-2. The women’s team started strong as well, winning two out of three of their doubles matches. Freshmen Liya Davidov and Katrine Luddy took their match 8-4, followed by seniors Grace Minassian and Alyssa Baldi winning 8-1. The team then went on to sweep all its singles matches in two sets. To close out the match, freshman Julia Yoon shut out her opponent, winning both sets 6-0. On the second day, both teams lost to NCWC by scores of 7-2. The men’s team claimed one doubles match with the team of Michibata and Gavornik winning 8-7. Wright won the team’s only singles match in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1. The women’s team followed suit by winning one doubles match, as the team of Baldi and Minassian won 8-2. Yoon closed out the match winning the only singles match of the day for the women in two sets, both of them 6-1. The College returns to the court today at 3 p.m. when the men take on Rutgers University-Newark and Rutgers University-Camden back to back. The women then take on the University of Rochester on Friday, April 12. The men will play Rochester the next day.

The team came out on top, sweeping the match 9-0 and increasing its record to 9-1 while the women had the week off. The teammates truly outperformed themselves and won every singles and doubles match. The team of senior Mitchel Sanders and junior Thomas Wright won the match 8-4. Right behind them was the team of freshman Matthew Michibata and junior Gokul Murugesan, which swept its match 8-1. Senior Matt Puig and sophomore Andrew Mok also swept their doubles match 8-2 to finish out the teams’ doubles sets. In singles matches, all players won their respective matches in two sets. Sanders took his match 6-1 and 6-3, while Michibata followed 6-1 and 6-2. Freshman Justin Wain swept his match 6-0 and 6-1, followed by Puig winning 6-2 and 6-1. Wright shut out his opponent in both sets 6-0 and freshman Nikola Kilibarda ended strong, coming out on top 6-0 and then 6-2. The Lions return to the court on Saturday, April 6, when both the men and women’s teams take on Ithaca College at home.
By Christine Houghton Sports Editor On Thursday, March 28, the lacrosse team took on Gettysburg University, where it lost its third game in a row and leveled its record at 4-4. The Lions outshot Gettysburg — the No. 1 team in the country — 33-31, but still fell in the end by a score of 16-5. After a three-goal scoring spree to start the game by Gettysburg, the College answered all three back in smooth succession. Junior attacker Olivia Cleale threw an assist to junior attacker Talia Bouzakis to score the Lions’ first goal of the game. Followed quickly by two goals from junior midfielder Alexandria Fitzpatrick, the game was tied up 3-3. Gettysburg answered with four straight goals and ended the half up 7-3 against the Lions. Continuing its rally, Gettysburg scored six more goals to extend its lead, but the streak was soon broken by graduate student midfielder Erin Harvey, who scored her ninth goal of the season. Followed quickly by another goal from Fitzpatrick, that would be the Lions’ last score, as Gettysburg went on to score three more goals before the final whistle. The Lions will hope to snap their losing streak on Saturday, April 6, where they will face Montclair State University at home.
By Christine Houghton Sports Editor The women’s lacrosse team came up short during spring break, and fell to both of its opponents. Traveling to Amherst, Massachusetts for the first matchup on March 16, the team battled Amherst College in a non-conference game that unfortunately lowered its record to 4-2. The team began the game down five goals, as Amherst dominated early on, but the Lions eventually got on the board through a goal by graduate student midfielder Erin Harvey. Later in the first half, Amherst would score two more goals, which were only answered by one goal from the Lions’ junior attacker Olivia Cleale in the final minutes of the first half. The second half was much more eventful for the Lions, as Harvey opened with a goal less than 45 seconds into regulation. Amherst soon answered back with a goal, but the Lions rebounded quickly. The Lions scored three in a row from junior midfielder Alexandria Fitzpatrick and back-to-back goals from junior attacker Kasey Donoghue. That would unfortunately be the last time the Lions scored, as Amherst added to its tally and ended the game on top 11-6. Despite the loss, senior goalkeeper Miranda Chrone had a strong game with nine saves, while sophomore defender Brittany Blair put up a valiant effort to tie a career-high four ground balls. The second matchup came on March 20, where the Lions took on Tufts University at home. The College got on the board first off a goal from Fitzpatrick, who has now scored in every game this season. After a response by Tufts, junior defender Jessica Allen was able to find senior midfielder Kathleen Jaeger for a Lions’ goal and their second lead of the game. However, after three unanswered points from Tufts, the team went into halftime down 4-2. A goal early in the second half by Tufts moved its lead up to three over the College, the largest for either side during regulation. Junior midfielder Allie Gorman and Jaeger scored back-to-back goals, cutting the difference to one goal. With a little under nine minutes remaining, the team was down 7-5, neck and neck with its opponent. The deficit was soon closed after Harvey and Donoghue both scored seconds apart. Chrone had 11 saves on the day, but they were not enough, as Tufts was able to force a turnover and eventually score the final goal with just minutes left, helping it win by a final score of 8-7. The Lions will return to the field on Thursday, March 28 as they hit the road to take on Gettysburg University.

The men continued their winning streak, while the women fell in their first loss of the season. The men finished their match up 5-4 over NYU, starting with a strong performance in doubles matches. Freshman Matthew Michibata and senior Tim Gavornik dominated the competition, finishing with a score of 8-1. Senior Mitchell Sanders and junior Thomas Wright followed suit easily, coming out on top 8-3. The team then went on to win half of the singles matches with every player winning in straight sets. Freshman Justin Wain came out on top in two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-4. Gavornik followed by winning 6-4 and 7-6 in two sets. Wright closed out the match for the men, winning his singles in two sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-4. The women suffered a 6-3 loss against NYU, giving first tick in the loss column of the 2019 season. Performing well in doubles, the team took two of the matches in its favor. Freshmen Liya Davidov and Katrine Luddy topped their opponents 8-3. Seniors Grace Minassian and Alyssa Baldi won second doubles and came out on top 8-6. Davidov won the team’s only singles match in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, and 7-6. On March 20, the men’s team took on Haverford College at home, grabbing a 5-4 win to keep its streak alive. Winning two out of three doubles matches to start the day off, the teams of Michibata and Gavornik, as well as Sanders and Wright both topped their opponents 8-7. Struggling early in the singles matches, the team bounced back to win the final three and ultimately the match. Gavornik and senior Matt Puig both took their matches in three sets, while Wright won his in two sets. On Friday, March 22, both teams took on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The team also excelled in singles, winning four out of six matches. Sanders and Michibata both took their matches in two sets, while Puig and Wright played three to take down their opponents. While the women did not fare as well against Wisconsin, they had a great start to the day, winning two out of three doubles matches. Davidov and Luddy just passed their opponents 8-7, while Navya Yemula and Sarah Phung won by a score of 8-6. Baldi and Yemula were the only two to take singles for the Lions, winning in two and three sets respectively. On Saturday, March 23 both teams traveled to the University of Mary Washington, where they unfortunately came up short. The men’s team was handed its first loss of the season, 8-1. Puig was the only winner for the College that day, taking his singles match in three sets. The women’s team also fell to Mary Washington by a score of 7-2. Davidov and Baldi were the only two to win matches and won by player retirement and in three sets respectively. The men return to the court on Saturday, March 30 to play on the road against Ramapo College, while the women take on Ithaca College at home on April 6.
