Women's rugby beats UPenn 61-0 for first win of the season

Heads up! This article was imported from a previous version of The Signal. If you notice any issues, please let us know.

After the women's rugby team lost its first match against York College, it seemed as if they could not get a break.

Two weeks ago, they lost their second match to St. Joseph's University. And last weekend, their match with Lehigh University was cancelled at the last minute due to referee problems.

After those two losses and a week without a match, the women's team set out once more to try for their first win of the season in Saturday's match against the University of Pennsylvania. Finally, the Lions were successful, defeating the Quakers 61-0.

Senior eight man Carolyn Kaschack scored the first try for the team, and that was complimented by sophomore fly half Tracey Karmel's kick for the extra point.

Junior outside center Kerri Matthes scored the second try for the team, and once again Karmel kicked for the extra point.

Kaschack scored once more for the lions, but Karmel missed the kick for the extra point. As the time wore on, the Lions kept scoring, preventing the Quakers from attempting a comeback.

Still in the first half of the game, junior prop Jennifer Jones scored another try, and Karmel also scored the extra point on the kick. The final try of the half came from Karmel herself, and she also made the kick.

The second half proved to be just as eventful for the Lions. Kaschack started out the half with a try, and once again Karmel made the kick.

Junior lock/flanker Heather Rodgers scored twice in the second half, and both kicks were made by Karmel. Karmel scored another try and made the kick for the extra point, making the final score 61-0.

"I think we played a very intense game of rugby today," Jones said. "And after not playing for two weeks I think this win was just what our team needed to help keep us focused. Everyone stepped up today and played their hearts out."
