The College's women's lacrosse team picked up where it left off last season with a 13-6 home victory over the Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU)-Florham Devils on March 9 in its season opener.

The Lions are ranked No. 1 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association NCAA Division III preseason poll after winning the Division III National Championship last season.

Last year, head coach Sharon Pfluger and her squad defeated Gettysburg College 10-4 in the national championship game, handing the Bullets their only loss of the season.

The Lions' defending championship run began with a victory over the Devils.

Junior midfielder Karen Doane led the way for the Lions, scoring seven goals. Junior Toni-Anne Cavallo also had a strong game for the Lions with three goals. Junior goalie Caitlin Gregory posted a victory in her first start for the Lions. She allowed four goals and made 11 saves.

For FDU-Florham, sophomore attacker Amanda Wayne and junior midfielder Lindsey Specht each scored two goals. Devils goalie Brittany Laning made seven saves and allowed 13 goals.

Lions lacrosse action continues on March 22 as the College visits Ursinus College at 6 p.m. and hosts SUNY-Cortland on March 25 at 1 p.m.
