The Neighbourhood is back with their newest album, “(((((UltraSOUND))))),” and it is filled with emotion, nostalgia and mellow beats that keep listeners coming back for more.

“(((((UltraSOUND)))))” was released on Nov. 14, and the creators, an alternative rock band from Southern California, have reached over 47 million streams for just this album. The overall vibe of this album is moody and atmospheric, allowing for listeners to grasp the deep emotions the lead singer, Jesse Rutherford, is going through.

The band first rose to fame in the 2010s with one of their greatest hits, “Sweater Weather,” introducing listeners to the band’s moody taste and style. Throughout the past few years, The Neighbourhood has produced a variety of songs that range from guitar heavy rock to smooth R&B.

However, what makes “(((((UltraSOUND)))))” so special is that the band has been on a hiatus since November 2021. Hence, the release of this album reassured listeners that the band is still producing music together.

In their latest album, many of the songs encompass themes of loneliness, reminiscing of good days, uncertainty for the future and the tension that comes with intimacy. The genre of this album is mainly indie rock as well as a mix of alternative rock and dream pop. Many of the tracks envelope ideas of self reflection and the complex nature that comes with relationships.

Even the title, “(((((UltraSOUND))))),” prompts the listener to think of imagery regarding unseen layers, and begs listeners to dive deeper into the hidden meanings behind each song.

The song that stood out the most and is the most popular is “Lovebomb,” which discusses the singer’s relationship with his love interest. The song talks about how he is deeply in love with her, and he admits to “lovebombing” her — or showering her with excessive affection. However, his tone and the lyrics make his love for her sound genuine.

Another stand out song included “Daisy Chain” as it flowed with the signature beachy, slow vibes of The Neighbourhood’s style. With many references to flowers and natures, it presents listeners with a slightly paradoxical setting as the song itself is about a break up the singer recently experienced. As the song continues, the tone shifts to a more angered and regretful beat with the acoustic guitar taking a prominent role, emphasizing the loss the singer is feeling.

Many fans thought the album was another great addition to the band’s discography, enjoying the nostalgia of their signature sound. On the other hand, some critics thought the whole album was a bit too safe. Nonetheless, the album’s coverage of the emotions that come with being alone and recovering from loss, is truly deep. It prompts listeners to reflect on their own emotions, and check in with their own well being.

Overall, The Neighbourhood has now shone a new spotlight on themselves, highlighting their talent that has never left. Their newest album is reflective of the band’s continuing interest in moody themes and deep messages. Each song tells its own story, evoking feelings and memories within every listener, begging everyone to stop and listen.
