“The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” was leaked in its entirety on X on April 13. The film was set to release in October of this year, but hackers had other plans.
Originally, the animated movie was scheduled for a theatrical release, but plans changed in December. 2025 when Avatar Studios and Paramount announced that the movie would premiere on Paramount+. This shift left fans upset. Not only were their expectations unmet, but a theatrical release is what many of the fans anticipated for this beloved franchise.
Lauren Montgomery, an animator for the original animated series and director for the new film, took to Instagram to share that the movie had finally wrapped up back in March 2026, and to share her dismay with its streaming release as well, stating, “The recent decision to move us from theatrical to streaming might give the impression that the quality wasn’t sufficient, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. This movie deserves to be seen on a big screen!!!”
The Change of release left the fandom with mixed emotions. Comments under Montgomery’s Instagram post are a clear display of this. One user said, “I’m honestly so sad about this decision. I was so excited to watch the new Avatar Aang movie on the big screen. It’s the kind of story that deserves that experience. Finding out it might just go to Paramount+ instead really breaks my heart. I’ve been waiting for this for so long, and now it feels like that dream is gone.”
Another user commented, “Congrats! I'm sure it will be amazing! Disappointed I won't be able to see it on a big screen, but so it is. ❤️” This outrage is believed to be the reason behind the movie leak!
Between April 11 and 12, user @ImStillDissin had released clips of the movie to X with the caption, “Nickelodeon accidentally emailed me the entire Avatar aang movie…” The post was taken down within 24 hours, but the internet responded quickly.
Within hours of the takedown, the entire movie appeared online, starting with 4chan and spreading to X. Despite the production's attempts to remove the film, accounts across X and other platforms continued to share the movie. Fans shared their thoughts on the film and even made edits.
WIRED reported, “According to @ImStillDissin, a screen-grabbed version of Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender was circulating among people he knew from his days in the hacking community, one of whom shared it with him.”
Paramount launched a swift investigation, shortly after Singaporean police arrested a 26-year-old. Singapore’s Strait Time reported that the man had gained unauthorized access to the server and posted parts of the film online. “He is currently being investigated for unauthorised access to computer material, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine not exceeding $50,000, or both.”
An animator of the film, Julia Schoel, shared her outrage over the leak on X after the incident, saying, “We worked on the aang movie for years with the expectation that we’d get to celebrate all our hard work in theaters… just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on twitter like candy.”
Scoel further states, “I don’t like seeing people use paramounts awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support Paramount+... This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”
This leak could potentially affect how Avatar Studios and Paramount will move forward with future Avatar projects, as it was a big part in a larger plan for the adored series. However, there still has not been an official change to its scheduled Paramount+ release.
