The College’s women’s soccer team stunned at home on Saturday, Sept. 12, coming even against the No. 13 ranked Swarthmore Garnet in a 1-1 tie. The team remains undefeated on the season at 3-0-1.
The Lions have continued to look dominant in both of their home games, trouncing the Arcadia Knights 6-1 on Sept. 9, to improve their record to 3-0. As the season progresses, they have continued to show their depth, with 19 players on the team seeing at least 20 minutes of action.
Although their second game ended in a draw, keeping the Garnet at just one goal was an impressive feat. Swarthmore has averaged 3.2 goals per game, showing that the Lions are capable of being a great defensive team.
The Lions five goals against the Knights are the most they’ve scored in a single half since Rutgers-Newark in 2023, where they scored five goals in the second half of a 9-1 victory.
They dominated the Knights, leading in shots with 37 compared to just eight. Junior Maggie Murphy led all scorers with two goals, pushing her total for the year to a career best of five goals in just three games of the 2026 season.
Senior Alyssa Alfano extended her regular season streak of scoring a point to nine straight games, dating back to last year, with her assist on Murphy’s second goal of the season.
Junior Jenny Ward, senior Taylor Bielan, junior Ava Visaggio and freshman Kate Johnson all added a boost for the Lions with one goal each. Junior goalkeeper Ellen Williams finished with four saves. She's been a standout in goal this year, tallying 15 on the season through just four games.
Williams added a season high nine saves against the Garnet, with five in the second half. Ward has registered either a goal or assist in each of the College’s first four games, and freshman Olivia Hnat added one assist as well.
The Lions success on the field has earned them a spot in the top 25 rankings, securing No. 14 after their draw with Swarthmore.
The College looks to add to their undefeated record Saturday, Sept. 19, when they play against the Ithaca Bombers in Ithaca, New York at 1 p.m.
