The College's softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against No. 23 William Paterson University on Monday to fall to fourth place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 23-13 overall record and a 7-7 mark in conference play.
In the first game, Pioneers' sophomore first baseman Liz Sisca had two home runs to down the No. 21 Lions 9-1 in a five-inning contest.
The Lions were shut down in both games by freshman pitcher Diane Schraer, who compiled 10-2/3 impressive innings on the day and surrendered just one run in each game.
The College lost the second game 3-1 as it could only manage one run. Sophomore pitcher Jess Kohut kept the Lions in the second game with seven strong innings of work, giving up three runs.
The Lions swept a doubleheader against the Ospreys of Richard Stockton College by scores of 3-2 and 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon, snapping a two game losing streak.
In the first game, the Lions took advantage of two Stockton errors scoring three unearned runs to hold off the Ospreys for a 3-2 victory. Sophomore outfielder Kristen Boyer went 2-for-3, including a triple and a run scored to lead the Lions.
Senior pitcher Jess Donohue allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. Sophomore pitcher Julianne Lajiness fanned three and yielded one hit to earn the two-inning save.
In the second game, the Lions once again took advantage of Stockton misplays scoring three unearned runs in the second inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Kohut pitched a complete game giving up five hits and striking out nine to help the Lions to the 6-2 win. She did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.
Senior infielder Siobhan Scullin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman outfielder Christina Lizzi added an RBI double and a 1-for-2 at the plate.
In a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon, the Lions took a victory from Haverford College 6-3, handing the Fords their sixth straight loss.
The Lions scored early, putting two runs up in the top of the first. Junior designated player Kristen Meister singled up the middle and then scored on a double to the left centerfield gap by Lizza. Senior outfielder Zimmerman followed up with another double to left to drive Lizzi in.
The Lions pushed the lead to 6-1 in the third by tacking on four more runs. Zimmerman singled through the left side to score Lizzi, who had reached second on a single and a steal. The next two Lions reached safely to load the bases for sophomore catcher Sandy Russo, who connected on a two-run single to bring home Zimmerman and sophomore outfielder Jen Hughes.
Sophomore infielder Erin Cusmano finished off the productive inning with an RBI single to center to score Venetucci.
Lajiness pitched well, giving up one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts.
The Lions will hope to make some noise in the NJAC Tournament, which begins on May 5.
