The defense and goaltending of the Lions' women's soccer team has been so impressive lately, it seems any lapse by their competitors will result in a victory. The Lions have extended their shutout streak to four, as they defeated Rowan 1-0 last Wednesday, and Rutgers-Camden 4-0 on Saturday. In a game of previous unbeatens, the Lions posted the victory over Rowan, when senior forward Brittny Boyd netted her fifth goal of the season, with 27:08 left. The Lions continued that dominance Saturday, when they visited Rutgers-Camden, and outshot their opponent 22-1.
The victories this week improved the Lions to 5-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and 9-0 overall on the season. The College is ranked third overall in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III rankings. No. 25, Rowan fell to 10-1 overall.
As has been the case for the entire season, the Lions were spectacular defensively, as Rowan could only muster eight shots the entire game. Senior goalie Alissa Kacar had to make just three saves en route to the Lions seventh shutout of the season. The Lions have allowed only two goals the entire year, both of those coming in a 5-2 victory over Montclair State University.
The offense was paced by Boyd, who scored on an unassisted, loose ball in front of the Rowan net, as time was winding down in the second half. With the way the Lions have dominated games defensively, that was all they would need.
Saturday's game against Rutgers-Camden was delayed and relocated to Camden Catholic High School, due to a sinkhole at the Rutgers-Camden soccer facility. The unexpected change of scenery didn't affect the College.
The Lions' offense got it started 29 minutes into the first half, when sophomore forward Dana DiBruno scored on a one-on-one bout with Raptors sophomore goalie, Therese Comella. The Lions took advantage of a free kick by sophomore back Courtney Krol, which bounced off a pack of players at the top of the box, and was tapped in by freshman forward Jamie Kunkel. It was Kunkel's first collegiate goal.
The Lions would add two more goals in the second half, when junior midfielder Lisa Kokotajlo netted a long direct kick, grazing just off the crossbar, for her second goal of the season.
So far this season, the Lions have outshot their opponents by a stunning margin, 207-30.
The Lions will travel to No. 25 Johns Hopkins University at 4 p.m. on Monday.
