You can debate whether Ewing is located in North, South, Central or Northeast Central-South until you turn blue, but we can all agree: it's in the middle of nothing much.
Since freshmen aren't allowed to bring their cars on campus, NJ TRANSIT, for better or worse, is your all-purpose means of transportation. You can use NJ TRANSIT buses and trains to get home or visit your friends at their new schools.
Local bus and train schedules are available at the Brower Student Center information desk and at njtransit.com.
The Trenton Rail Station is your gateway to Pennsylvania, New York, and of course, the rest of New Jersey. It's a half hour ride from campus on the 601 bus, which stops outside the student center in Lot 3.
From Trenton you can grab a SEPTA train to Philadelphia (to reach the University of Pennsylvania and other Philly schools) or NJ TRANSIT's Northeast Corridor Line to New York City's Penn Station and all points along the train route, which include Princeton Junction (Princeton University), New Brunswick (Rutgers University), Newark Liberty International Airport, Newark (NJIT and Rutgers-Newark) and Secaucus Junction (for transfer trains to Seton Hall University, Montclair State University, etc.).
Use the Web site's handy Trip Planner on the main page to check train times, connections and fares. If you're stuck, call NJ TRANSIT at (800) 772-2222. They're very helpful -- once they take you off hold, of course.
To guide your friends to the College, have them look up the most direct route to Trenton (use the Trip Planner when in doubt). From the rail station, they can take the 601 bus or hitch a cab for around $12.
Your virgin trip could be hectic if you've never taken public transportation before - or seen Trenton -- but the best advice is to plan as much as possible beforehand. Check out these travel tips for more ways to ensure a smooth ride.
For repeated trips, buy train tickets in advance to save time. Buy round trip. There is a surcharge for buying tickets on the train.
Have up-to-date schedules of all buses and trains on your trip route with you when you travel.
Make sure you get on the right bus/train. It's easier to double check before you get on than to end up in the wrong place. Some trains are express and may pass by the station you need.
Look on the NJ TRANSIT Web site for any travel advisories prior to your trip, as there may be service changes or delays that concern you.
Have the numbers of several local cab companies in your phone in case you arrive in Trenton after the 601 buses stop running (check the schedule!). Have cab money handy.
Plan for at least 15-20 minutes between transfers. The 601 also stops at Green Lane (across the street from campus behind the Townhouses). Run there if you don't think you'll make it to the Student Center bus stop on time.
