The College's men's and women's tennis teams improved their records last week as the men improved to 7-1 with a win over Haverford College and the women moved to 12-1 with a win over New York University (NYU).
The men's team walked out of Pennsylvania on Thursday with a 7-1 win over No. 30 Haverford, handing the Fords their first dual meet loss of the season.
Lions juniors Michael Klimchak and Roger Mosteller defeated Fords sophomores Alex Buxbaum and Thomas Kinrade, ranked No. 9 in the nation, 8-2. The win improves the College's pair to 16-2 overall and 10-0 in dual meet competition.
"We knew that we were a better team and we just had to go out and show it," Klimchak said.
Klimchak, ranked No. 15 in Division III singles competition, improved to 15-2 on the season with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Buxbaum.
Senior Corey Ball beat Fords sophomore Evan Stiegel to improve his record to 14-4 this year and his career record to 62-18. Junior Eric Ferriere posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over senior Elmar Trust.
At No. 2 singles, Mosteller was only one point away from tallying a win before the match was canceled due to inclement weather.
The men's team is ranked No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Region while Haverford is No. 7 in the Atlantic South Region.
The women's team added another win on Friday with a 9-0 victory over the Violets, who are ranked No. 14 in the region. The College is ranked No. 28 nationally and No. 8 in the region. The women's 9-0 flawless win is their eighth this season in only 13 matches.
Senior Kristen Turturiello demonstrated an impressive will of endurance by winning at No. 4 singles against NYU junior Holly Smith with a score of 6-1, 3-6, 15-13. Turturiello is 14-3 on the season and 63-19 in her career.
At No. 2 singles, junior Christina Contrafatto posted a 6-2, 6-1 win against Violets senior Erika Olsen, improving her record to 10-1. Contrafatto teamed up with freshman Jackie Shtemberg at No. 1 doubles to tally a win against Olsen and senior partner Katie Lee 8-1. The College's pair is 22-4 this season with an impressive 11-1 dual meet record.
"The win was great for us. NYU is always a rival since they are in our region and we play them in the fall during the Welcome Tournament," Contrafatto said. "We always want to go out and beat them as bad as we can and knowing that two years ago we won 5-4 really shows us how much we've improved."
Shtemberg, ranked No. 9 in the region in singles, notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Violets sophomore Stephanie Tu. The win pushes Shtemberg's record to 24-3 overall and 12-0 in dual meet action.
The men's team visits Johns Hopkins University on Sunday at 1 p.m., and the women's team hosts Bates College today at 1 p.m.
