Top 10 things every freshman needs to know

Heads up! This article was imported from a previous version of The Signal. If you notice any issues, please let us know.

The editors of The Signal have compiled a top 10 list of the things we think all freshmen should know while navigating their first year at the College. In keeping with our general method of doing things, this list is in no particular order.

1. Join a club, but not too many clubs. All those student organizations seem exciting at first, but you, like the rest of us, will run out of time if you take on too many organizations in your first year.

2. Double major. If you have the drive to do it, go for it. A second major eliminates some liberal learning requirements. You can graduate on time with two majors.

3. Do your best freshman year because it only gets harder from here on out.

4. On that note, have as much fun as you can freshman year because your free time will slowly vanish as you get older.

5. Take advantage of the gym to avoid the "Freshman 15." It's free so you might as well use it!

6. If something seems interesting to you, don't sit around waiting for a friend to go with you. If you like jazz, go see the jazz band. If you think a lecture will be interesting, go check it out.

7. Read The Signal. This sounds like shameless self-promotion, but it's serious advice as well. We do our best here to cover all the relevant events going on at the College. Read the SFB column if you care about what the College is doing with part of your tuition. And cop shop is always good for a laugh (especially if you're in it).

8. Don't blow all your meal plan points at the beginning of the year. You're going to want them at the end of the semester when you're in your room studying for finals. And if you don't study, you could at least use the extra points to buy things at the C-store and take them home.

9. Don't go home every weekend.

10. Don't let boyfriends or girlfriends back home keep you from enjoying your time living at the College and making the most of it.
