The College’s women’s tennis team saw action this weekend in the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional that took place in Geneva, NY, from Saturday, Sept. 27, through Monday, Sept. 29.
The Lions had a very strong tournament, with all four players that competed in the singles bracket recording at least one victory. In doubles action, junior captains Jasmine Muniz-Cadorette and Emma Allen played well into the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Anna Prestera and freshman Maddy Stoner fought hard place second in the consolation bracket, dropping a tight 8-6 match in the finals. Muniz-Cadorette advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play with three wins before dropping a nail-biting three-set match to sixth-seeded Kirsten Ackerman from the Sage College. Also in singles play, Allen and sophomore Katie Buchbinder scored wins in the opening round of the tournament.
The highlight of the tournament, however, may have been the incredible run through the tournament by freshman Brittany Reedman, who strung together five straight victories to advance to the finals. Her quest for the tournament title fell short in the title match when she fell, 6-0 to Kate Christensen from Vassar College. Reedman recorded the biggest win of her career in the semifinals against William Paterson’s Brittany LaBruna by a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. LaBruna had entered the tournament as the top seed and was also the defending champion.
Reedman had an impressive start to the tournament, as well, knocking off three seeded players in her first four matches. After winning in straight sets in the opening round, she knocked off the fourth, eighth and ninth seeds in succession to earn a spot in the semis.
This tournament was the last event on the schedule for the Lions, as they now prepare themselves for conference tournament play.
