Harry Styles, known for his songs with One Direction, his extravagant style and many hits of his own, released a new album, “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally” on Mar. 6 and it does not disappoint.
Kicking off with “Aperture,” the single released on Jan. 22, the immediate feeling that comes with the album is the need to dance. Yet, it is more complex than that, as many of the songs also prompt nostalgia, self-reflection and finding one’s self.
Partially inspired by LCD Soundsystem, this new album has a techno, angsty and electrical vibe to it. Falling into line with his usual pop genre, he sings a lot about the feelings that come with spontaneity and authenticity, which gives the whole album a new kind of style that evokes movement and the need to groove among listeners. “Are You Listening Yet?” is especially unnerving, while also including lyrics about the need for originality.
Despite receiving some mixed reviews from critics, the album is still quite impressive. Made up of 12 songs, Styles worked on much of it while living in Berlin instead of in his usual London environment.
Styles plans to start his national tour in May. He will visit a variety of places including Amsterdam, London, Sao Paulo, Mexico City and New York City. The specific tour dates and tickets can be found on Styles’s website. Styles said that he wanted this tour and this album to feel immersive so that the audience can experience the emotions of being lost on the dance floor, or lost mid-disco.
The song “Coming Up Roses” encapsulates the feeling of being lost in a song or totally wrapped up in the feelings that come with music. This song in particular is especially lovely as it includes violins as he repeats, “It’s only me and you.” It has a “La La Land” feel to it, enticing listeners to sway with each note.
Thus far, the top most listened to songs from this album are “Aperture,” “American Girls” and “Ready, Steady, Go!” His melodic voice is smooth like honey in every song. Which is why this album has received over 60 million streams since its release.
One of the songs on “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally” that should not be overlooked is “Carla’s Song.” It stands out because it is like he is talking to someone. It sounds like he is encouraging someone to reach for their dreams and embrace their true self. This inspires listeners to love themselves as well and feel free to express their unique authenticity.
Overall, Styles’s fresh album is a wonder. His new work is especially exceptional because of its purpose. He wants the audience to feel like they are in the disco. He has created a track that is designed to give one the same feeling they would get if they were so utterly enthralled within a song. It is a unique take on literally attempting to put his listeners into his shoes.
