Beloved country singer Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80 on August 5th, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones in Nashville, TMZ reports. While she was known for being one of the most iconic country singers, there is so much more that Parton has done besides performing that has contributed to her admiration from millions of people.
Many people know Parton for her music. As a country singer, some of her most famous songs include “9 to 5,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and plenty of others that have been hits for decades. She was also the original artist behind the song “I Will Always Love You,” which was famously covered by pop and R&B artist Whitney Houston. The cover of the song was a huge success, and Parton earned around 10 million dollars in royalties, which she put into her community by investing towards a property in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Nashville. This was later called “The House that Whitney Built.”
That commercial property was not the only thing Dolly invested in to give back to the community. In fact, Parton was all about putting her money into things that benefited the people around her. One of the most notable things that she established was Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which is still running to this day. For 31 years, this program has been mailing books to children once a month in between the time they are born until they turn five years old and start kindergarten in order to promote childhood literacy. This program is free of charge, no matter the income, and delivers books in countries such as the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia and the United Kingdom.
According to a letter from Dolly herself in Imagination Library’s website, the program is a tribute to her father, who lived his life being unable to read. Dolly has made it her goal through this organization to make sure that children grow up not only being able to read, but also by enjoying the magic of reading a good book by mailing books that are age appropriate for small children. At least three million children have benefited from this program so far.
Another way Parton has contributed to her community was by becoming a co-owner of Silver Dollar City Tennessee, a small theme park, and transformed it into the resort millions know today: Dollywood. Dollywood is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and not only has been an award winning theme park, but also demonstrates Parton’s love for her community. This resort, consisting of a waterpark, theme park and a hotel, provides over 19,000 jobs to people in the Pigeon Forge region.
It also raises over 200 million dollars worth of taxes on state and local levels, promoting community development. For all of its employees, the Grow U Program covers 100% of college tuition, once again promoting literacy and higher education. The park also promotes the culture of the Appalachian and southern regions through their themes, showing Dolly’s true love for the place that she came from and the people who live there.
Parton has contributed a massive amount of money, resources and kindness to her Tennessee community and beyond, all while releasing 49 studio albums within her lifetime. Her services have assisted so many people that there is talk of naming Nashville's International Airport after her, which was backed by Tennessee governor Bill Lee. Whether or not this idea becomes a reality, it is clear that Parton’s legacy will always be remembered by all of the people that looked up to her for many years to come.
