Xí Jìnpíng, Gavin Newsom meet to discuss the future of the climate crisis

Unexpectedly, the California Gov. Gavin Newsom visited China’s president, Xí Jìnpíng to discuss climate change action on Oct. 25. Newsom also met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice President Han Zheng. Newsom intrigued Chinese officials as they discussed opportunities to deliver climate crisis action mostly due to California’s robust economic market. The U.S.–China trade system benefits from California’s unique multi-billion dollar economic ties to China by trading high technological innovations and goods; Newsom used this relationship to bolster a stronger and more immediate collaborative effort to combat the climate crisis.

Lubbock, Texas, a county close to the New Mexico border, has passed an ordinance banning people from assisting women to travel to get an abortion, despite abortion being legal within the county itself. This new “travel ban” serves as another attempt from conservatives to further restrict abortion access and female autonomy since the fall of Roe v. Wade.

U.N. Chief under scrutiny after remarks condemning Israeli offensives in Gaza

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has come under fire in recent days after statements made at a meeting of the U.N. Security Council in New York last Tuesday. In a speech to the council, he issued a condemnation of Hamas’s attacks on the Israel border on Oct. 7, which left more than 1,400 dead and 222 taken as hostages, the majority of them civilians, in estimates made by Reuters. His statement also included a rebuke of Israel’s retaliatory measures in the days since the initial attacks, expressing concerns regarding the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Mike Johnson becomes House Speaker after weeks of turmoil

The search for the new Speaker of the House ended after three long weeks. On Oct. 25, House Republicans elected Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) to become the new Speaker. In the days since Kevin McCarthy was voted out of the Speakers office, House Republicans made slow progress in the search for a new Speaker. According to the New York Times, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) lost a secret vote on Oct. 20 to remain as the G.O.P. nominee for Speaker.

President Joe Biden arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel on Wednesday to reaffirm the United States' solidarity with Israel in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war. The high-stakes visit was meant to bolster Israel’s fight against Hamas and negotiate agreements over providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, according to CNN.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited China on Oct. 17 in a show of support for the nation’s leader Xi Jinping’s efforts to expand its economy and influence overseas, reported AP News. Xi welcomed a number of representatives, including Putin, to the Belt and Road Forum held in Beijing. The Belt and Road Forum is a showcase of the Chinese leader’s initiative to build new infrastructure and expand the nation’s diplomatic global influence.

29 dead in Burmese displacement camp in military targeting of rebel groups

The people of Myanmar have been routinely subject to abuses and bombardment by their own government, in the two years since a military coup replaced democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi and members of her National League for Democracy party. AP News reports that an airstrike conducted by the Myanmar military killed 29 people in a displaced persons camp on Oct. 10, among them about a dozen children. Targeted was the Mung Lai Hkyet camp located in Laiza, alongside the Chinese border in the northern state of Kachin.
