Essential workers are the underappreciated backbone of campus

Essential workers do a lot more for our campus community than they are recognized for. In order for this campus to be successfully run, there must be people who ensure that the walkways and streets are cleared, the residence halls remain safe and that facilities continue to work even through dangerous conditions. While the rest of the campus is told to stay home for safety reasons, these workers are working through the rough conditions to return the College to normal as soon as possible.

Career culture is quietly excluding students

Career culture, referring to the pressure to have your career plan mapped out while still in college, has slowly become the dominant framework through which students are evaluated. While yes, of course, preparing students for their future and encouraging them to enter the work force early is important, the intensity and immense pressure of this culture is quietly excluding many students. These pressures narrow definitions of success, and students are only measured based on their internships and experiences.

The arrests of Don Lemon and Georgia Fort are unconstitutional censorship

Journalists being arrested for doing their job not only puts their rights on the line, but also the public’s right to know what is occurring in America. We, as a country, cannot be a functioning democracy when accountability is being treated like an obstruction. The government is slowly silencing dissenting voices, going against our very own constitutional amendment. Silencing reporters does not give others freedom. Freedom of the press is not optional, but essential, especially in times like these.

OPINION: Silencing reporters is hypocritical

The removal of Kimmel and Colbert from the air isn’t just a blow to late-night television, it is a warning to free speech in journalism. Whether you agree with what these hosts have said or not, these are journalists whose job it is to speak their mind, challenge power and spark conversation. Silencing them is quite literally the opposite of what freedom of the press stands for.
