Recognizing that today's commemoration of Memorial Day, was initially known immediately after the Civil War as Decoration ( of military veterans graves) Day, the Department of New Jersey, Jewish War Veterans United States of America, our nation's oldest, active, military veterans organization, established by Jewish veterans of the Civil War, is proud to announce the recent election of Julian "Bud" Batlan, Manalapan, to the office of Junior Vice Commander of the Abraham Lincoln Camp 100, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Batlan, has served as the commander of the Jewish War Veterans Monmouth-Ocean County Council, as well as the Jewish War Veterans National Deputy Military Officer, and Jewish War Veterans National Deputy Americanism Officer. It is interesting to note that the percentage of Regular Members of the Jewish faith in this one SUVCW camp is greater than the current Jewish percentage of the population of the United States of America. This reflects the historical, patriotic, wartime tradition of the Jewish citizens of America. History confirms that during every major American War since those of the Jewish faith finally gained admission into the 1655 Dutch militia of New Amsterdam (today's Manhattan, N.Y.), the Jewish citizens have served in all of our country's major wars in percentage numbers that have always been, and still are, greater than the Jewish percentage of the population of America. The Abraham Lincoln Camp 100 is pleased to note that Union Army Color Sergeant Benjamin Levy, 1st New York Infantry Volunteers, awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, is the Civil War ancestor of one of its Jewish members.
