A new bill that would create a judicial branch of the Student Government Association (SGA) was proposed at last week's SGA meeting by Senator at-Large Ravi Kaneriya.
The purpose of the bill is "to create a Student Court that will allow for a balance of power in the SGA." The Student Court would have the power to administer SGA impeachments, declare legislation unconstitutional and void, oversee revisions to club constitutions and administer SGA elections.
The Student Court would serve as an "unbiased body to decide appeals and election laws," Kaneriya said. He also said that by handling constitution revisions the Student Court would free up more time in the senate for other matters.
The Student Court would have one chief justice and eight associate justices.
New justices would be appointed by the executive president, and justices would remain in office as long as they were full-time students at the College. For the first year of the court's creation, the justices would be chosen in a campus-wide election.
Kaneriya announced at the meeting that he is also working on the creation of a Web site called SGA Booklist, which will list what books are required for next semester's courses.
The booklist will allow students to "find out what books they need so they can buy them over break," Kaneriya said. He also said that students could get their books for less money over break because they would have the time to search for the best price rather than having the College Bookstore be their only way to get their books in time for classes to begin.
Executive president Annelise Catanzaro said that College officials had been very embracing of ideas expressed in SGA's Auxiliary Services Resolution. The resolution had requested a formal apology from the office of Auxiliary Services for excluding SGA from last summer's contract renewal with Sodexho Dining Services.
Leo Inglima, Sodexho liaison, announced that a new Web site and e-mail account have been created to handle issues with dining services. Complaints can be sent to sgasodex@tcnj.edu, and information and updates can be found at tcnj.edu/~sgasodex.
The Haitian Students Association and TCNJ Roadrunners were approved as new clubs, and changes to the constitutions of the Manhunt Club and the Minority Association for Pre-Med Students were approved. TCNJ Roadrunners is a club for students who like to run races, but cannot practice to the extent of the varsity team.
