The world was reintroduced to one of comic books' most beloved characters, Superman, on July 11. The brand new movie amazed audiences and critics, many claiming it to be one of the best movies of the year so far. Written and directed by James Gunn, most famous for his work on Marvel Studios’ “The Guardians of the Galaxy,” Gunn created a new take on Superman and jump-started his new DC cinematic universe.

“Superman” opened to a $122 million domestic box office, with its global opening reaching $217 million. From there, the movie continued to gain more traction day by day, with high reviews and a final box office of a little over $600 million. It sits at a fresh 83% from critics and an even better 90% from fans on Rotten Tomatoes. It was clear: “Superman” was a success. Fans knew that a sequel to this movie was coming; however, no one could have anticipated how soon.

On Sept. 3, multiple posts were made across social media, immediately gaining the attention of fans across the world. A sequel to “Superman” was coming. Titled “Man of Tomorrow,” the film will be released on July 9, 2027.

This news took the internet by storm. Of course, fans anticipated a sequel to be released, but an announcement confirming the movie is in the works nearly two months after “Superman” was shown in theaters is not common. The buildup and excitement for this movie have already begun, with many other actors from the film reposting the announcement, teasing their return.

The online post was made with drawings done by Jim Lee, Jorge Jimenez and Mitch Gerads, who are all respected artists in the comic industry. The artwork by Lee depicts Superman and Lex Luthor, with Luthor wearing a mechanized suit while Superman holds a screwdriver. There are two screws below Luthor, teasing that Superman has tinkered with Luthor’s suit. The other two artists, Jimenez and Gerads, depict the two characters in a fight. The artwork has been another topic of discussion, as many fans believe that it is in a direct relation to what the movie will be about, something viewers will find out in less than two years.

The next DC project is “Peacemaker,” which is currently airing on HBO Max, and next year, audiences are being introduced to Superman's cousin in “Supergirl.” Gunn has stated online that both of these projects are directly linked to “Man of Tomorrow,” and encourages fans of “Superman” to watch both. He also teases that David Corenswet’s Superman will appear in another DC project before his expected return in “Man of Tomorrow.”

With the success of “Superman,” DC Studios has momentum heading into their future projects, something that Gunn wants to keep moving forward. In a recent interview, he states that his goal is to deliver projects that fans will enjoy and ones that will keep audiences engaged and excited. Since being named CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn has yet to slow down and continues his work on future projects, including the recently announced “Man of Tomorrow.”
