On Friday, May 3 at approximately 8 a.m., Cyclone Fani struck the east India coast near the Puri district in the state of Odisha, according to CBS News.
By that night, Fani struck the highly-populated state in India with rain and wind gusts of over 125 mph. However, the storm showed signs of weakening as of the same evening, according to The New York Times. Before the storm hit, India and Bangladesh evacuated over a million people residing in the coastal areas at danger. Despite the evacuation, at least 160 people were injured.
According to CNN, the death toll has reached at least seven people, most of whom died as a result of heavy trees falling and collapsed buildings nearby. The cyclone is equivalent to a category 4 hurricane.
Fani is the worst cyclone to affect India since a 1999 storm that killed nearly 10,000 people, CBS News reported. Police in Odisha have been capturing the storm and its disastrous effects on social media, such as Twitter, by sharing videos and photographs.
Over the course of the day on Friday, May 3, the Meteorological Department rated the storm as “‘extremely severe,’” which proposed further concern, CBS News reported. However, as the storm continued, it was later rated as “‘very severe’” and finally “‘severe,’” which emphasizes the storm’s decline over just a few hours.
Meteorologists believe that Fani could possibly be fierce because of extreme climate change across the globe. Intense storms in warm, moist areas in addition to severe dry spells may make storms much worse, The New York Times says.
According to CBS News, Sitanshu Kar, a spokesman for India’s national government, tweeted, “‘Extensive damage to structure of AIIMS Bhubaneswar reported due to #CycloneFani. All patients, staff, students safe. Many water tanks have blown off, lighting poles are down, air conditioners damaged. We have enough supplies, ready to support the state.’”
CNN reported over 4,000 shelters that have been put in place for evacuees and 56,000 officials were deployed for evacuation efforts.
The New York Times reported that road reconstruction for the district is already being planned, The Indian government also said that electricity, internet and phone lines will soon be restored in the city. Where the storm first began, CBS News reported that India’s Ministry of Home Affairs stated that power and communication lines were no longer running. While conditions are harsh, officials are making efforts to assist in relief.

For my final column of this semester, it has come to my attention that these fashion tips have been geared toward women. Recently, a guy friend of mine mentioned that he was struggling to find some summer fashion trends as the weather gets warmer. Although there are some gender-neutral fashion trends, some tips are fit for men for any occasion. Men’s fashion trends include the flexibility to dress up or down and hone in on certain fashion trends for nearly any occasion. For all the guys out there, this one’s for you.
Plaid button down shirts. Plaid is your best friend for barbecues, pool parties or any outdoor event this summer. It is a great option for men looking to spruce up their outfits because the pattern’s colors can be easily coordinated with the rest of your look. Look for neutral colors such as grey, black or brown that you can wear for any summer event. A button-down shirt is casual, but can be dressed up. Pair a plaid button-down shirt with matching shoes, khakis or jeans, and a belt for the perfect summer look.
Boat shoes. Boat shoes are best for all seasons, but summer is a great time if you’re looking for trendy and comfortable footwear. Boat shoes add an extra touch of class to any outfit you wear, so they’re great with a button-down shirt and tie or a graphic T-shirt and shorts. Be sure to coordinate boat shoes with a scheme of colors rather than keeping your entire outfit neutral.
Denim pants. You can never go wrong with denim during the summer. Not only is denim stylish with any shirt, but it also portrays a relaxed summer vibe. Opt for light-colored denim and save darker denim for the fall in order to optimize that summer mood. Once the weather gets warmer, go for shorts and strive for a length that is suitable for your needs. Don’t get stuck in a constant sea of blue jeans. Olive, gray, white and blue are great for the summer.

Spring is still in the air for another few months, so we may as well continue to get in the spirit. By the time early May rolls around, I often feel like I am out of ideas for spring fashion trends. However, there are many quick finishing touches you can add to an outfit to give it a new spin. If you are searching for a way to revamp your wardrobe or enhance your spring fashion, try out these easy tips.
Ruffle top. Ruffles tops are perfect for spring weather. Go for ruffles that are relaxed and have a nice flow around the edges. These tops can be dressed up with a skater skirt or dressed down with distressed jeans. Coordinate your outfit with a pair of sandals to kick your spring energy into gear.
Printed sneakers. Printed sneakers are essential for any spring wardrobe. They come in many designs and patterns to match your preferences — some common options include flowers, polka dots or zig-zags. Suede slip-ons are great if you’re looking for a comfortable pair of sneakers and the suede material is also perfect for all types of spring weather. Find a pair of cute socks to wear with these shoes for added detail.
Slide sandals. Slide sandals are a must for late spring and early summer weather. These comfortable shoes are perfect for outdoor and indoor occasions. Slide sandals come in all different heel heights, so you can choose which pair you are most comfortable in. Dress up an outfit by wearing slide sandals with fabric straps. Not only is this look super trendy, but fabric straps are also fresh and seasonal.

Summer fashion trends are already heating up, but something I always struggle with is finding the best summer hairstyle. Between 80-degree temperatures and humidity, summer hairstyles only work if they are easy, stylish and keep me cooled down. Warm spring days are the perfect opportunity to start trying out these summer looks.
Twisted ponytail. I used to just throw my hair up in a high ponytail because it was a quick and easy process, but doing that repeatedly put a strain on my scalp, so I’ve been wearing loose ponytails that keep the hair out of my face without any pain. To add detail, french braid the side of your hair and gather it with your loose ponytail. If you have short hair, twist the end of the braid into a circle to loop into a ponytail, and if you have long hair, extend the braid farther down into a ponytail.
Ballerina bun. Who doesn’t love a classic bun? Buns are great for summertime because they keep the extra heat off of your neck and are a classy hairstyle. Personally, summer heat tends to force my hair into heaps of tiny curls that are difficult to maintain. Pulling my hair into this type of bun works well because I can get all of the hair out of my face and even jazz up my style with a hairband or barrettes. Wear a sundress with ballet flats to maintain the classy theme.
Waterfall braid. A waterfall braid is a trendy way to keep the hair out of your face and add detail to any hairstyle. If the weather is cool enough for you to wear your hair down, a waterfall braid is a great way to style the crown of your hair. This style allows you to move the majority of your hair to the back to show off your makeup or “summer glow.” For added detail, wear accessories, such as sparkles for the Fourth of July or flowers to create a more earthy look.

Between gloomy, brisk weather and sporadic 80-degree days, figuring out what to wear in the spring can be complicated. How do you plan out an outfit that keeps you warm during a frigid morning but won’t make you overheat later in the day? Luckily, there’s an easy fix — layer with pieces that can be worn for every season.
Rompers. Rompers are definitely in style for both spring and summer. Not only are they easy to dress up or dress down, but they can be worn in nearly every type of weather. If the weather is chilly, grab a cardigan or light sweater to keep your shoulders warm. Pair solid color rompers with patterned cardigans or vice versa to strike a balance. If the weather is warm, break out your sandals and summer hats.
Jumpsuits. Jumpsuits can fit the the mood of practically any occasion. They are perfect for dressy and low-key occasions in both the summer and spring. For added detail, wear a belt and matching jewelry like a layered necklace. In the summer, wear toe rings or ankle bracelets.
Overalls. Overalls are truly a fashion statement that will never die out. They are great for barbecues and other outdoor events because they are relaxed but put together. Overalls come in all sorts of styles such as denim or khaki, so try all different types to see which goes best with your personality. When it’s cloudy, wear a light sweater or long-sleeved shirt to keep warm.

CNN reported that rapper Nipsey Hussle died after being shot in Los Angeles at around 3:20 p.m. on March 31,. The killing occurred at a nearby clothing store that Hussle owned, according to law enforcement officials.
Hussle was reportedly shot multiple times by 29-year-old Eric Holder, who quickly escaped in a getaway car after firing at the rapper. Hussle was rushed to the hospital but died shortly after from a gunshot wound to the head, according to The Los Angeles Times.
After a two-day search, Holder was arrested on April 2 and has been charged with murder, along with two counts of attempted murder. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Thursday, April 4, when he was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, according to CNN.
Holder is being held on $5 million bail and could receive 25 years to life in prison if convicted of murder. He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 10, CNN reported.
Hussle’s death occurred just one day before he was scheduled to meet with Michael Moore, the chief of the city’s police department, about his concerns over gang violence, according to CNN.
“‘Our communities have lost too many young men and bright futures to the scourge of gun violence,”’ said Mark Ridley-Thomas, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, according to CNN. “‘For healing to occur, even from this terrible incident, justice must be sought through legal means, and community peace must be found,’” he stated.
While Holder is believed to be a member of a gang, The Los Angeles Times reported that detectives believe the motive is personal rather than gang-related.
According to NBC, before his death, Hussle tweeted, “‘Having strong enemies is a blessing.’”
While Hussle was the only one who died in the incident, two other people sustained injuries according to police.
CNN reported that they were transported to a local hospital and are currently in stable condition.

Spring is in the air, but there are still plenty of rainy days in April, which can put a damper on your mood and fashion. Although it can be tempting to stay inside all day dressed in sweatpants and an oversized T-shirt, you can still have fun expressing your style with rainy-day accessories that come in a variety of patterns and materials.
Florals. Although it is said that April showers bring May flowers, you can still wear floral patterns to brighten up those gloomy days. Mid-calf, floral skirts or flowy, floral skirts paired with a plain T-shirt are the perfect casual springtime look. If you don’t want to overdo the flower theme, add a few accessories to your usual outfit such as a flower crown or floral-patterned barrettes. To make patterned boots pop, wear a solid-colored outfit that matches the color scheme of your flowers.
Spots. For days when it looks like it’s monsooning, you can still be fashionable with spotted patterns like leopard print or polka dots. Wear pants, shirts, scarves or even use a leopard-print umbrella to add flare to your outfit. Wear solid browns and beiges to compliment your attire and stand out, whether it be for a regular day of classes or a fun night with friends.
Vinyl vibes. Vinyl is a great material to wear in the rain because of its resistance to tarnish and ability to keep your dry and warm. Vinyl boots and jackets will both keep you dry and keep your style in check. A vinyl jacket is the perfect crossover between a trench coat and a raincoat, making it great for spring weather. To maintain a modern look, wear a neutral-colored beret or wool scarf. You can even pair your outfit with a matching umbrella for added detail.

Looking ahead in the forecast, it appears that the weather will be warmer these next few days. While it may not feel completely like spring yet, temperatures are steadily rising and spring fever is growing more tangible. Dresses are the perfect springtime staple and come in many different colors, fabrics and styles. You can also detail to your spring outfits with accessories such as sun hats and belts.
Fit and flare. This is my favorite type of dress because it is classy, timeless and flattering on all body types. A fit and flare dress is great for spring because you can easily add a neutral cardigan on a breezy day or go sleeveless if the sun is out.
Floral dresses. You can never go wrong with a floral dress in the spring. Whether you are attending a formal, a lowkey get-together with old friends or a fancy wedding, incorporating flowers into your dress is always on trend. If you have a plain dress, add a floral design by pairing it with a scarf or a belt. Be sure that the flowers match your outfit — big, bold flowers go well with dark, solid colors while lighter, layered flowers should be paired with paisley or pale colors.
Denim dresses. Denim dresses are slowly making a comeback. The best part about them is that they come in all types of designs that exude different spring feels. Light denim dresses and tan boots create the perfect western look for the springtime, and dark, denim dresses are perfect for a night out. If you are looking to create an edgy look, try pairing light and dark denim.

Now that it’s officially spring, it’s time to pull out your T-shirts, cropped pants and sandals to celebrate the warmth. Although it’s tempting to buy a whole new spring wardrobe, it can be tough when you’re trying to save money. Instead of going to the mall for spring deals, you can make the most of your existing wardrobe by “DIY-ing” a few trends. Whether some of your clothes don’t fit or are worn out, there is always something creative you can do to spice up your style just in time for spring. Here are some trendy ideas to get your wardrobe ready for spring and save your money.
Ripped denim. Last season, one of my favorite pair of jeans began to fray and fade at the ankles and knees. Because they still fit me well, I wanted to see if I could salvage them with a pair of scissors. You can cut your jeans around the ankles to either make a v-shaped cuff, add more frays or cut the ankles shorter for cropped pants. For the ripped-knee look, use one side of the scissors to lightly scrape the kneecaps until you get a few rips.
Cropped bathing suits. I had a few tankini bathing suits that didn’t fit well anymore and started to fade, but instead of getting rid of them, I grabbed a pair of scissors and a pencil to help turn my old tankini into a cute bikini top. Before you begin cutting, use the pencil to draw a horizontal line on the flowy part of the bathing suit where you’d like the suit to end. As you cut, stick to using straight edge — fringes can cause the bathing suit to fall apart.
Layered belts. Throughout the winter, I noticed I have a lot of belts that I never wear, so I decided to weave together different parts of my belts to make the most of my wardrobe. If you’re looking to create a new accessory that’ll go with everything in your closet, use three neutral-colored belts, such as tan, black, brown or navy. Begin by cutting each belt into thin strands and gently braiding them together. When you’ve reached your desired length, detach the belt buckles from the two other belts to create one belt.

Wearing ankle-cut pants to show off patterned socks has become a popular trend on campus lately. While socks are meant to keep your feet warm during the winter, they can also be a fashion statement. With countless designs and colors, it’s easy for anyone to coordinate their socks and clothes or be bold by wearing socks that pop with a monochrome outfit.
Socks come in a variety of heights that will pair well with different shoes. Whether you prefer long socks with your tall boots or ankle socks with your skate shoes, either can really spice up any outfit. Here are a few sock trends that will add detail to your look.
Long argyle socks. This design is one of my favorites because it's vintage and combines a bunch of colors in a classy way. Argyle socks come in both spring-like pastels and dark winter tones, which makes it easy to match your socks with everything in your closet.
Ruffled ankle socks. This trend is an easy way to add a decorative touch to your outfit during any season. In the winter, wear low-rise shoes to keep your feet warm and add detail to your look. In the spring, wear ruffled socks with a pair of Mary Janes, a denim skirt and a blouse with a Peter Pan collar for a vintage look. If you want to keep your outfit modern, pair your ruffled socks with half-open sandals, ankle jeans and a thin sweater during those cooler spring days.
Knee-high knit socks. These socks are great in the winter when it’s freezing outside because they can be paired with boots or snow gear for extra warmth. Pull your socks up closer to your knee and fold them over to give your look added layers and comfort. Knit socks also come in a variety of colors, like beige, brown and black, which make them easy to pair with any outfit in your wardrobe. Match your knee-high socks with a pair of boots, jeans, a sweater and vest and you’re set with the perfect transitional ensemble.

No matter the time of the year, I love painting my nails. While spring and summer typically call for pedicures, giving yourself a manicure is appropriate in every season. Since manicures can be expensive, as a college student, I have found that painting my own nails is a cheap, fun alternative. It’s a meditative activity that allows me to be creative and experiment with the latest nail art trends.
While there are many nail kits you can buy that teach you how to paint different designs, sticking to the basics and adding to current trends is the best way to give your nails a personalized spin. Here are simple tips and tricks I have learned for my favorite designs.
Stripes. This is a pattern that’s in style every season and simple enough to do on your own. To keep the pattern simple, I tend to stick to three matching colors that vary depending on the time of year. For instance, you can use pastel colors during spring or shimmery gold hues for the holidays. To make painting on the stripes easier, you can use tape to cover sections of your nails to create even stripes. Start at the top of your nail and then move the tape as you go stripe by stripe to avoid smearing.
Sparkle. You can purchase colored nail polish with sparkles or just go for clear sparkle polish to coat the solid colors you already own. While sparkles add detail to your solid nails, the extra layer also protects your nails from cracking. To increase glamor, apply sparkle stickers to a few of your nails to make your design stand out.
Polka dots. Since I started watching hundreds of DIY nail videos, I’ve fallen in love with this trend. You have the freedom to change the shape, size and color of each dot, depending on what you’re feeling. Although this is a tricky design that takes time to learn, it can be mastered with a smaller brush and tons of practice. Rounder, bolder dots on your nails pair well with heavy sweaters and yoga pants, whereas plain pencil skirts and tank tops tend to match smaller polka-dotted nails.

Between below-freezing temperatures and icy slush, winter can feel like a lifetime, which makes it difficult to think of new outfits that are cozy and stylish. To break this fashion rut, I have been trying to accessorize with accessories that work for every style. This week, hats have been my go-to. Hats come in a lot of different styles, colors and fabrics that can upgrade any outfit. They are also a great way to hide your hair on those days when you can’t be bothered to style it. Here are some ways you can incorporate hats into your style.
Sports caps. Wearing caps that support your favorite sports team, whether it be football, basketball, baseball or hockey, is a way to express yourself and stay in fashion. Although sports caps are worn during the spring and summer months to keep the sun out of your face, they boost any outfit with added detail. If you’re not a sports fan, find a cap decorated with your favorite pattern or color or a cap that showcases other interests like your favorite band or a catchy slogan.
Beanies. Beanies give off relaxed and cozy vibes. The great thing about beanies is that they come in a variety of colors, designs and textures. Some beanies are made from wool or cotton, while others sport simple colors or wild zigzags. Beanies can be worn any time of the year and are a great way to keep your head warm or add a bohemian style to your look.
Berets. Berets may be deemed as a “French artist look,” but I think they make a fashion statement. Not only do they keep your head and ears warm, but they are ideal if you are going for a classy look. I tend to search for berets in solid colors, such as black, red or gray, because they look stylish when paired with a skirt or dress pants.

As we journey deeper into winter, there have been a few days of warmer weather that have made me excited for spring. Before we know it, sunny skies and fresh air will be here, and if you’re anything like me, you sometimes struggle to find cute outfits as the seasons change. When you clean out your closet this spring, be sure to keep these simple but key versatile pieces in mind.
Stylish skirts. Skirts are a fantastic addition to any wardrobe because they can be worn every season. Personally, I prefer short skirts with flared edges. However, pencil skirts are coming back in style too, and they are perfect for a professional event or just enjoying a nice spring day. If it’s still a little cooler out, you can wear a pair of tights underneath. Whatever type of skirt you wear, you can tuck in your top completely or leave it half tucked in, which are great ways to compliment your figure.
Infinity scarves. Infinity scarves hold a really special place in my heart because they remind me of my grandmother. I really fell in love with infinity scarves because of the versatility they offer. They are perfect for a casual spring day and can add layers to your look. Some of my favorite ways to loop infinity scarves include braiding, criss-cross or a loose knot. Infinity scarves come in many colors and patterns that can be incorporated into any outfit to add some extra style. No matter the weather, scarves are a fun way to keep your fashion up to par.
Open-toed shoes. After an arduous winter, your feet will be itching to jump out of your socks. Not only is this an ideal time to get a pedicure, but you can jazz up your style this spring with open-toed shoes. You can wear sandals or high heels – anything that lets your feet breathe and that matches your outfit choice. I have a pair of chunks that I wear all the time in the spring. Having open-toed shoes in a staple color such as black, brown or dark blue are essential for putting together quick spring outfits.

I always have outfits planned that I hope to sport to class, the gym or social events, but I also try to express my style through my hair and makeup. During these cold months spent inside, take advantage of the opportunity to learn new hairstyles and new tips and tricks for makeup. Here are some of my current favorites.
Half-up half-down varieties. I have always been a fan of wearing my hair in a half-ponytail. I think it’s a causal style that you can easily put together but also jazz up for a special occasion. Typically, I’ll use a clip or a hair tie to divide my hair into two even layers. At this point, I sometimes leave my hair draping over my shoulders. However, I also enjoy braiding the upper region, especially in the fall and winter months, to add elegance. Curling the top and straightening the bottom is another variation of this hairstyle that I love. This is a great option for formals or dances because it looks formal and shows off multiple hairstyles.
Barrettes. This is a really helpful tip if you’re having a rough hair day. There are so many times when I wake up and feel like my hair is all over the place. What I have found to be easy and flattering is to use barrettes or even bobby pins to clip layers of my hair off to the side. You can try to do a symmetrical look and clip off your hair in even sections off to both sides if that makes you more comfortable. You can also use light amounts of hairspray to keep your hair from falling.
Layered eyeshadow. As someone with sensitive eyes and skin, I realize that makeup can be both a burden and a blessing. Something I find helpful is layering colors without going overboard. For example, if I’m wearing light colors, I’ll mix and match some pastels and start layering with the lightest colors near my eyelashes and going darker as I move up. This gives your eyes a beautiful reflection and is great for any occasion.

As we continue into the depths of winter, I find myself yearning for spring. However, I can’t help but look forward to staying inside and going online shopping. Winter is a great time to indulge because you probably have some gift cards or cash saved up from the holidays, and you don’t have to leave the comfort of your bed. Several of my favorite stores offer great deals this time of year, especially during President’s Weekend and Valentine’s Day, that you can shop from to add to your fashion scheme this winter. Here are some deals that will enhance your winter wardrobe.
Free shipping on accessories. Winter accessories are a must, especially during freezing temperatures. The good news is dozens of retailers make affordable and cute winter accessories like head wraps, scarves, gloves and mittens. Keeping your head warm is important during the winter, so head wraps are great if you also want to show off your hair. Scarves are another great way to keep you warm and can be found in Forever 21, H&M and Old Navy at affordable prices. Finally, avoid dry, cracked skin with trendy texting gloves. They are great for busy multitaskers who want to keep warm while staying in fashion.
Buy-one-get-one turtlenecks. I think turtlenecks are one of the most underrated fashion trends for the winter season. They keep your body toasty and come in an assortment of styles that you can enjoy. For example, I like to pair mine with leggings or tuck them into jeans with a belt. Several online shopping stores, such as Kohl’s, SONOMA or Target, offer deals where you can buy one turtleneck online and get a second half off, or even free, so keep your eyes peeled for these discounts.
Rewards points for ear muffs and fuzzy socks. If you spend a certain amount of money at a store or even sign up for emails about rewards, you could get items on sale or for free. It’s one of the best perks about being loyal to a brand. Ear muffs are a stylish option to keep your ears warm, while fuzzy socks prevent your toes from freezing. Both come in all sorts of designs, so be sure to pick the ones that fit your needs and wants.

With a new year and a fresh start to the semester, there is no better time to start implementing a brand new style. One of the biggest challenges I find during these winter months is trying to keep warm while also staying in style. Although I am someone who loves snowflakes and icicles, the cold weather forces me to wear layer upon layer and wind up looking - and feeling - like a marshmallow. After the holidays, there are plenty of ways to stay in the winter spirit and in style while keeping warm.
Cable knit long boot socks. They not only keep your toes warm, but they also add some extra flare to your boots. These socks come in various colors and styles depending on where you find them, such as beige, brown, argyle or marble. The patterns should also vary depending on the boots you’re sporting. For example, I normally wear tan cable knit long boot socks with buttons lined up on the left and right sides of the boot, whereas with my black boots, I prefer a deep violet and wool-trim sock to crop around my knees. You can find them in-store or online at affordable prices, and they’re a great way to warm up your look.
Stylish hats. Keeping your head warm is of utmost importance during the winter, as body heat can be quickly lost if you don’t properly protect your head. When temperatures drop, you can bump up your style with a cute hat. Hats are really wonderful during the winter because they can bring out your face shape and enhance whatever look you’re going for. A quality fur trapper – faux will do if your budget is tight – is a flattering way to showcase a fur winter coat or scarf. Another one of my current favorites is the wool wide brim hat because it keeps my face free and the wool keeps my head warm.
Cardigans and belts. Drape, belt, layer and repeat. Simply stated, you can dazzle your outfit by opting for a draped cardigan. Dramatic shapes add flow to your outfit and keep your torso warm during the winter. You can add layers underneath the cardigan with tank tops, scarves or turtlenecks to create a multicolor or pattern effect. If you want to keep the cardigan closed, tie a cute belt around your waist. In terms of color, texture or pattern, a contrasting belt helps your outfit pop, which is just what these cold winter months crave.

“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is a riveting retelling of the classic fantasy tale that whisks viewers away on a journey of emotions, drama, exploration and self-discovery. The film is the perfect holiday story for both children and adults, and debuted in theaters on Nov. 2.
Set in Victorian London, young Clara Stahlbaum (Mackenzie Foy) is heading downstairs to join her siblings as they gather around the tree on Christmas Eve.
It is soon discovered that sadly, Clara’s mother has passed away, and the father of the family, Mr. Stahlbaum (Matthew Macfadyen), is giving away each of his late wife’s last gifts to her children.
Clara’s siblings get typical gifts, such as a toy Nutcracker and a dress, but Clara is gifted a locked egg with a card that reads, “Everything you need is inside.” This spurs the free-spirited young girl to set out on a mission to open the egg and connect with her mother’s dying wish.
Conflict ensues when the Stahlbaum family attends a Christmas Eve ball. The family is struggling to cope with Mrs. Stahlbaum’s untimely death, but Clara in particular is having trouble dealing with her feelings. As a teenager, she is trying to develop her own life, which proves to be much more difficult without a mother to look up to.
She and her father argue when it becomes evident that Clara does not want to keep with the family traditions, such as dancing with her father to the Nutcracker suite.
During the Victorian era, arguments between parents and adult were seldom, but the family tragedy makes it difficult for them to avoid conflict.
A distressed Clara finds herself rummaging through the castle’s corridors in search of the key to unlock her mother’s gift. Instead, finds herself following a golden thread that leads straight into a snow-covered land full of surprises.
Clara meets Captain Philip Hoffman (Jayden Fowora-Knight) who becomes her ally and escorts her to the royal palace, where she meets three regents of each land— Land of the Sweets, Land of Flowers, Land of Snowflakes and Land of Amusements.
The cinematography of each land was intricate and very detailed, which only added to my awe of the beauty behind the plot, and made the fantasy worlds more believable.
The regents are honored to meet Clara, and Clara soon learns that she is the princess of this strange world. The Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley) accompanies Clara to a ballet recital that explains the story of the Four Realms, drawing a connection between the conflict in the Fourth Realm and the key to open the egg.
The ballet recital was one of the most elegant parts of the movie — not only did it give the story more depth, but the dancing reminded me of the classic “Nutcracker” performance, which put me in the holiday mood.
During the ballet, Clara learns that Mother Ginger, regent of the Fourth Realm, resides deep in the forest and is protected by an army of seemingly evil mice. Sugar Plum instructs Clara to defeat Mother Ginger, obtain the key and bring it back to the palace.
With twists and turns along the way, Clara works to restore order in the Four Realms and conquer evil to leave the land with dignity and peace. Her quick wit, passion for engineering and faithfulness to her mother allows her to find her way.
The contents of the egg, in addition to the character’s true colors, are all revealed on a journey of dialogue, music and dance, leaving viewers entertained throughout the entire show.
The evolving plot made the movie complex to follow at times, and I was always asking myself, “what could possibly happen next,” which only helped me further escape into the fantasy world onscreen.
Throughout the movie, light music accompanied the dialogue. The plot is ultimately the most important part of any story, but the music in the background added emotion to the script and made the movie come alive. During the movie’s action scenes, the riveting music and clamor grew to a dramatic crescendo, which only drew the audience in further.
By the time the credits are rolling, viewers marvel in Clara’s stark character transformation from a lost girl to a strong, fulfilled young woman. As soon as she enters the Fourth Realm, she learns that she can trust few and must pick her enemies wisely.
The movie is certainly a confidence booster for young women. It shows them that they have the power to control their destinies and make positive change, should they wish to rise to the challenge.

Shouts coming from a live plant and many scared shop owners could be heard through the corridors of Kendall Hall from Nov. 14 through Nov. 17 while TCNJ Musical Theatre performed “Little Shop of Horrors,” after a culmination of over two months of planning and preparation.
The organization decided to dedicate the performance to the memory of the late music education major Jason Zujkowski, who had originally been set to play the baritone saxophone in this production, and to honor his love of music and theater.
The show took place in the Don Evans Black Box Theater and starred freshman chemistry major Jonathan Vogel as Seymour and his love interest, Audrey, played by sophomore elementary education major with a music concentration, Mary Direnzo. The show was directed by junior communication studies major Jason Monto.
“Little Shop” was Monto’s first experience directing a TMT show, but he had some experience from his time as assistant director of “Sweeney Todd” last fall.
Rehearsals began back in September, and students quickly came together to make the show happen. Monto enjoyed the experience directing and working with such a cohesive group.
“Seeing it all come together before my eyes is really amazing to me,” Monto said. “Stringing together everyone’s individual talents to make people laugh, smile, and forget their troubles for two hours is something special.”
“Little Shop” is a mix of drama, romance, comedy and adventure that creates one terrifying treat. Mr. Mushnik’s plant shop is financially failing, but when a plant appears and is captured after a solar eclipse, business begins to boom again as the plant grows. However, it appears that human blood is the only thing that satisfies the plant’s, Audrey II, hunger, and Seymour, a shop worker who falls for fellow worker Audrey, work together to save themselves from the blood sucking plant while keeping the business blossoming.
While the two begin secretly feeding Audrey’s abusive boyfriend’s body, dentist Orin Scrivello, to the plant, and eventually Mr. Mushnik, Audrey and Seymour must make a decision-save their lives and budding romance, or die together and let Audrey II take over.
The set featured Mr. Mushnik’s plant shop, the main setting and three rotating walls that became both the dentist’s office and Skid Row bricks. Set designers and the carpentry team spent many hours together devising a plan to steady the walls and design them to fit the show’s needs.
“At first, the walls were a bit wobbly, but now they can swiftly move and are steady, which is exactly what this show demands,” said Rebecca Conn, a senior math major and assistant carpenter.
This is Conn’s fourth time working with the carpentry team. She also served as the treasurer for All College Theatre. Conn enjoyed working on the production and thought the show turned out well.
“This was one of the best shows I think that TMT has put on, and everything from the music, acting, and set was on point,” Conn said.
Even in the midst of a snow day, and a show cancellation on Nov. 15, the team came together to put on four sold-out shows.
Viewers were amazed at Audrey II’s growth throughout the show, as she began as a tiny plant, then was able to sit comfortably in a pot on a shelf, outgrowing that pot, and finally, growing to lie on the floor.
Audrey II was the product of an actress and two puppeteers. Senior management major Karaline Rosen voiced the plant and puppeteers, senior journalism and professional writing major Kyle Elphick and senior finance major Gigi Garrity helped move the plant convincingly around the stage.
Audrey II’s frightening yet amazing capabilities added to the show’s success, and helped develop the love not just between Seymour and Audrey, but also between the cast and crew.
“Every production has a story, but this was one that I will hold in my heart,” Monto said.

During a recent job interview, the hiring manager asked me a question that I had never encountered before: “How have you changed the most over the past four years?”
I think the question surprised me because day-to-day, I rarely notice changes in myself — I am doing pretty much the same things as any other typical college senior. I’m beginning the job hunt, thinking about my education and finishing strong in my classes.
When I look back to pictures of freshman-year me, I also see nothing different. I still have the same smile, same birthmarks, same clothing style and even the same glasses. As cliche as it sounds, those moments really do feel like yesterday.
If I try hard enough, I can still remember the smells of my freshman dorm’s hallways and feel the tears I cried when I said goodbye to my family for the first time.
I’ve learned so much from my classes, enough knowledge to last a lifetime. I learned how to work well with others and become a leader from both my academics and extracurricular activities.
Yes, I have grown intellectually, but that was just like high school, right? And before that, just like middle school, and prior to that, just like elementary school. Each new walk of life presented me with challenges and opportunities that helped me become wiser.
So, as I stared at the man in the suit smiling back at me, I felt dumbstruck. Looking back on my four years, I feel like I’ve been lost, even discouraged at some moments during my time as a student, I felt exactly the same as I did when I signed the document to enroll at the College. But at the same time, I sometimes feel like my emotions take over, especially when I start to think about life after graduation. Call it a case of growing pains or plain uncertainty, this also didn’t seem to fit the answer to the question.
Suddenly, one word came to mind –– resilience. This is the word that I feel defines my college experience and my transformation as a student. I have learned something over these past four years that no textbook could ever teach me –– I learned how to be strong and how to keep moving forward.
Before coming to college, I was always a person who shied away from challenges, but I have learned to react to drawbacks with persistence, until I can achieve my goal. Rather than breaking down and not knowing where to turn, I have learned to stay strong and accomplish my goals to the best of my ability. I no longer feel anxious about challenges –– I feel ready to face them.
Living away from home, overcoming heartbreak and putting myself outside of my comfort zone are just a few of the things that I have learned that have changed my outlook on life. It is in these moments of hardship that I have learned about myself.
Regardless of what I choose to do, I hope to live a life that solves problems and helps people.
Overall, I have learned to simply enjoy each moment and face my challenges head on, without backing down. As an adult now, I can attest that this is by far the most valuable lesson I have learned, that has changed my life over these last four years.

“The Haunting of Hill House” is certainly not a show for the faint of heart. The supernatural horror Netflix series, created by Mike Flanagan and released on Oct. 12, is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson.
The series follows the Crain family, a seemingly normal, loving family who is brought back home to the Hill House during the summer of 1992 to complete renovations and deal with a family tragedy. Hugh (Timothy Hutton) is the head of the family and is in charge of renovating and constructing the mansion. Meanwhile his wife Olivia (Carla Gugino), is designing and remodeling the mansion.
Originally planning to sell the Hill House and move to rebuild their own, the family is drawn back into the memories of their home and their lives together. While they planned on selling the Hill House and moving away, unexpected repairs make their stay much longer than initially intended, and strange, terrifying things begin to happen to each of the family members.
The series documents the family’s early days in the house and the lives of Olivia and Hugh’s five children. Their eldest is Steve (Michiel Huisman), who is an author. Shirley (Elizabeth Reaser) is a funeral director. Theodora (Kate Siegel) is a therapist. Luke (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) is a recovering addict and has a twin sister, Nellie (Victoria Pedretti). Each of the children face different struggles and triumphs as they conquer adolescence and later adulthood.
As a child, Nellie was able to see the paranormal and experience two lives — she often floats between the worlds of the dead and the living. Throughout her childhood, no one except for Luke believes that she has this ability.
A family tragedy brings the siblings back together after being estranged throughout their adult lives, and the series bounces back and forth between the characters’ childhoods and their lives in the present day. Piece by piece, viewers begin to put together what happened to the family between the past and the present, and it seems that they have been deeply affected by the haunted house they grew up in.
What makes this show so diverse is the transition between the past and present. This series requires viewers to pay strict attention to who is speaking and what time period it is — otherwise, it is very easy to get confused.
Each episode features a different member of the family and his or her story. The house that they lived in became a famous haunted house later on, and some of the siblings take advantage of that public attention.
For instance, Steve was not as deeply affected by the house’s scares, but he published a novel that became quite popular much to his siblings’ dismay, since he did not truly experience much of what he wrote about and took advantage of their struggles.
The siblings, after enduring such a traumatizing childhood, are doing their best to grow up into well adjusted adults — though they are barely hanging by a thread. Currently a therapist, Theo struggles with coming out as a lesbian to her family, but also struggles deeply with her childhood trauma, the cause of which is hidden deep within the basement of the Hill House. Now trying to overcome substance abuse issues, Luke chases after his family after stealing from each of them multiple times in order to obtain money for drugs.
The captivating music and the gloomy, dark Hill House draws viewers into an eerie haunted world. The story portrays elements of surprise and a plot twist along the way that helps viewers put the past and present together and untangle the source of the family’s deep-seated psychological trauma.
