Increase in retirement age causes mass protests in France

Protests have erupted across France over President Emmanuel Macron’s move to force through pension system reforms that will raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. Although the proposed pension reforms have already been unpopular among workers since the measure was put forth in January, the manner in which the bill was passed has sparked the most anger. After it became apparent that the bill would not be passed through the parliament, on March 16, Macron ordered Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne to invoke a special constitutional power to force the bill through without a vote.

Growing security concerns of Chinese-owned social media app TikTok may lead to a national ban

As the social media app TikTok has grown in popularity in the United States, increased concerns about privacy and security have arisen, leading to an initiative to try to ban the app. Issues regarding whether the app is collecting Americans’ private information and manipulating users through its algorithm has catapulted Congress’s desire to remove the app entirely from U.S. devices.

As Manhattan grand jury announces indictment, Former President Trump is facing other legal woes

Former President Donald Trump was indicted by a New York grand jury on March 30. While the charge has not been directly revealed at time of writing, the decision was based on a hush money scandal that occurred in 2016. The 45th president is facing other legal challenges, as well including possible interference in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election and the withholding of classified documents at Mar-a-lago.

Dominion Voting Systems sues Fox News for false 2020 election claims

A $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News by Dominion Voting Systems filed in March 2021, claiming that Fox News was spreading false election claims during and after the 2020 Presidential Election, has led to a landmark case. Dominion Voting Systems Inc v. Fox News Network LLC could significantly impact how news commentators report on the news moving forward. The case could also reinforce what news organizations will be held liable for when they spread false information.

Silicon Valley Bank collapse sends shockwaves through financial industry

On March 10, California-based Silicon Valley Bank collapsed and was taken over by federal regulators, marking the largest failure of a U.S. financial institution since the height of the global financial crisis of 2008, according to AP. The financial industry, already struggling with the consequences of climbing interest rates and self-inflicted wounds, has felt the shockwaves after the collapse.

Supreme Court Justices holds a hearing on Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan

The Supreme Court held a hearing on President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan that would cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for borrowers with limited earnings, according to NPR. If the program is implemented, 43 million student loan borrowers will benefit, and nearly 45%, or 20 million people, can have their remaining student debt fully canceled. About 1.12 million New Jersey residents have applied for federal student loan forgiveness, according to data from Politico.

FDA approves dual at-home test for flu and Covid-19

The United States Food and Drug Administration recently approved an at-home test for flu and Covid-19 on Feb. 24. This test would allow the general public to be able to determine if they have the flu or Covid-19, an important distinction due to the similar symptoms from both illnesses. The emergence of at-home tests to distinguish influenza from Covid-19 is especially important with the removal of on campus testing at the College.

Russia suspends nuclear arms treaty after Biden’s visit to Ukraine

On Feb. 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in his state of the nation address that Moscow is suspending participation in New START, the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty with the United States, according to Reuters. Putin cited the U.S.’ support for Ukraine and the accusation that the U.S. and NATO are supposedly working for Russia’s destruction as the reason behind the announcement.

Earthquake kills over 46,000 and leaves Turkey and Syria in crisis

In the early morning of Feb. 6, a level 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and north-west Syria, killing many in the strongest earthquake recorded for Turkey in almost 85 years, OCHA reported on the day of the catastrophe. Another earthquake of a 6.3 magnitude devastated the Turkey and Syria border on Feb. 20, killing six people and injuring more.

There are certain factors that need to be present in order for a planet to maintain its rings. President Joe Biden stood before Congress on Tuesday, Feb. 7 to deliver the State of the Union address, in which he discussed political gains and called on Congress to pass certain legislation. Biden faced some backlash during his speech from some members of the Republican Party for comments he made about various topics.
