Three years ago, the College community suffered one of its worst tragedies in recent history — an incident that is still vividly remembered by faculty, students and their families. Michael T. Sot, a 20-year-old sophomore math major and brother of Phi Kappa Psi from Clark, New Jersey, was fatally hit in a head-on collision while serving as a designated driver for his fraternity.

Following the Thanksgiving break and an increase in Covid-19 cases statewide, the College is combating the possible spread with a three-pronged approach to testing, according to an email sent to students on Nov. 29 by Director of Student Health Services Janice Vermeychuk. The College looks to monitor and lower the infection rate on campus in a timely manner using a three-pronged approach consisting of mandatory, random and voluntary testing.

On Nov. 14, Unión Latina hosted their annual gala in the Brower Student Center, with the theme this year being “Noche de Carnaval.” These galas, which have a different theme each year, are meant to celebrate Hispanic heritage and expose students to a taste of the Hispanic culture. These events have provided a formal night of dancing, socialising and food for over 10 years at the College.

On Nov. 3, Phil Murphy was reelected as governor of New Jersey after a close race against Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli. Though most New Jersey voters are registered as Democrats, Murphy and Ciattarelli remained neck and neck throughout the entire election, with more counties voting Republican than Democrat, according to The New York Times. This close call came as a shock to many pollsters, who had predicted an easy win from Murphy.

In an email sent to students on Sept. 20, Namitha Sethuraman, the administrative director of the Student Finance Board (SFB), announced that starting Sept. 24, students would be able to use the Loop Bus again. Running on Fridays and Saturdays, the Loop Bus is available for any student free of charge.

Delta Phi Epsilon held its annual Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) week event from Oct. 8 to 12 that focused on body positivity and eating disorder education. They set up a table on campus every day and hosted different activities that focused on self-worth and raised money to support the ANAD organization.

More than 30 street signs have been stolen from the Ewing Park and Brae Burn neighborhoods since August, affecting the response time of emergency services and costing a lot of money to replace. The Ewing Police Department is working alongside Campus Police in hopes of locating the signs and returning them to the community.

Pre-health student clubs held a blood drive from Oct. 27 to 30 at the Miller-Keystone Blood Center in Campus Town. Seven total organizations organized the blood drive, which registered 30 donors and collected 26 units, or pints, of blood in total. Those 26 units have the potential to save 78 people.

The College has once again ranked first in top public school rankings among regional public universities in the North and ranked sixth among regional public and private universities by U.S. News & World Report in the 2022 Best Colleges rankings. The one-day webinar consisted of a series of guest speakers, including an introduction from this year’s keynote speaker and author of “The Lost Art of Connecting: The Gather, Ask, Do Method for Building Meaningful Relationships,” Sarah McPherson.

The College’s Environmental Sustainability Council and Bonner Institute hosted “Fall Fest” for the campus community on Nov. 10 in the Campus Garden to promote causes relevant to their organizations along with good habits for students. The two-hour event was cosponsored by Fernbrook Farms, Lions Composting and TCNJ on Wheelz. The event consisted of snacks and drinks, pumpkin painting and free plants for students, and the cosponsors set up their own tables to promote their organizations.

Colleges Against Cancer’s (CAC) annual Relay for Life event took place in the Recreation Center on Oct. 23 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Co-sponsored by Alpha Epsilon Pi, Kappa Delta Rho and Sigma Kappa, this entertaining and emotional event raised $6,666.64 for the American Cancer Society and made a hopeful impact on the lives of those affected by cancer.
