Severe floods in parts of New Jersey and New York prompt a state of emergency

Historic floods devastated parts of New Jersey and New York on Sept. 29, after heavy rain poured down across the tri-state area. According to Reuters, the flooding in New York affected subway services and inundated ground level apartments and streets. Almost 8 inches of rain fell in some parts of the city. Many parts of North Jersey, including Hoboken, Jersey City, Essex County and Hawthorne, also experienced severe floods. Heavy rainfall also flooded Monmouth coastal towns including Asbury Park, Neptune, Deal and Ocean Township, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Biden Turns Around On Border Policy In New Stage of Wall Construction

In a reversal of one of the key points of the president’s platform, the Biden administration announced on Oct. 5 that it would begin construction on up to 20 miles of wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, according to The New York Times (NYT). The news is surprising given the administration’s fierce stance against former President Donald Trump’s previous border wall construction. Officials from the Biden administrations have claimed that the decision is a result of Congressional restrictions and lies outside of the president’s hands.

The climate crisis has been affixed to the global consciousness and for no group more strongly than today’s youth, who have taken on the issue by leading protests and staging demonstrations. The fight has now taken an unprecedented legal footing as a group of youth activists in Portugal begin a legal challenge against 32 European governments for what they claim has been a violation to their human rights, as reported by NPR.

Sen. Bob Menendez indicted on bribery charges

New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were charged with bribery as a result of accepting hundreds of thousands of cash and gold bars in exchange for power. According to an indictment filed in the Manhattan federal court that was made public on Sept. 22, Menendez and his wife agreed to use their power and influence to protect, as well as enrich, three New Jersey businessmen and benefit the Egyptian government.

The Supreme Court of New York has found former Republican President Donald Trump liable for fraud by deceiving banks and insurers by overvaluing assets used in business and loan deals. After being found liable, the court has set a civil trial in New York that will determine major financial and legal penalties in the coming months. The court’s actions mark a significant chapter in United States history, as Trump is the first president ever to be found liable in a civil case.

Just days after the one year anniversary of the death of a young Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, Iran’s parliament has approved a new Hijab and Chasity Bill that delineates stricter punishments for failure to adhere to the Islamic dress code. Those with more than four violations of the dress code could face up to 10 years in prison.

United Auto Workers on strike as companies are slow to yield

2023 has been a significant year for labor movements, with high-profile strikes taking place across all industries as employees show increased dissatisfaction with pay and working conditions. Of the 362,00 workers that have gone on strike this year, according to data from Cornell University, the United Auto Workers (UAW) have been the most recent labor union to join. AP reports almost 13,000 workers in auto-manufacturing plants have walked out since striking began on Sept. 14, comprising 13% of the union’s 146,000 members.

DACA ruled illegal (again) by Texas judge

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has been declared illegal again by a U.S. judge. According to KFF, 580,000 people in the U.S. are DACA recipients as of 2022. While the program remains intact for now, the case over DACA may end up in the Supreme Court. Despite the wide use of DACA, the program has faced scrutiny for years.
