Opinions

In a time of rapid media inundation, considering your media diet could be more important than previously thought. (Photo courtesy of Glenn Carstens-Peters on Unsplash)

OPINION: Your media diet shapes more than you realize

What was the last piece of media you consumed? Was it a piece of music or maybe a film? Or it could be something entirely different: maybe a short-form video or a news article. Many of us don’t really think about the media we consume. We live in a consumer-first culture, one in which we continuously take in new content without reflecting on it.

AI is developing too quickly. (Photo courtesy of Pexels)

OPINION: We should all be concerned about AI, and for far more than academic dishonesty

Over winter break, I read a highly engaging, yet worrying book about superhuman artificial intelligence, a technological advancement theoretically in reach within the next decade. “If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All” by Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares reviews the very real dangers of superhuman AI, and explains why it should be avoided at all costs. The book may be grimly titled, but its title serves a purpose.

Stereotypes often make it difficult for men to get the mental health help they need. (photo courtesy of Pexels)

OPINION: Men’s mental health needs more attention

For the average college student, life can feel like a constant balancing act. Time passes quickly, and many of us become overwhelmed by the growing weight of responsibilities. For college men in particular, this pressure can build rapidly. Taking time to sit with our struggles can feel like a burden, so instead, we often avoid reflection and push through discomfort.

While AI use becomes more ubiquitous, its environmental impact must be taken seriously. (Photo courtesy of Pexels)

OPINION: We need to stop dismissing the environmental impact of AI

You have probably used artificial intelligence today without realizing it. Not Googling a question and reading the Gemini response, or even opening up ChatGPT, within the regular apps you open every morning. Spotify deciding what song plays next. Google Maps rerouting you around traffic. Instagram choosing which post you see first. None of that feels blatantly like artificial intelligence, but it is, and it is constantly running. Data centers around the world are burning through electricity and water at an unsustainable rate.

To grow up gay is to face life's harshest battles and experience its most beautiful details. (Photo courtesy of IMDb)

OPINION: Growing up gay is brutally beautiful

Okay let’s be real for a second. Most people have seen “Heartstopper” or “Heated Rivalry,” and its all fun and games when cute boys are on your screen making out but do many non-gays really understand the depths of what growing up gay or discovering your sexuality is really like? Let’s take a peek into the lives of LGBTQIA+ members' childhoods for just a sec, well at least mine.

We see you ignoring your inner child and we’re tired of it. (Photo courtesy of IMDb)

OPINION: Most people don’t nourish their inner child, and it shows

There comes a time in everyone’s life when you face the realization that you’re not a kid anymore, and you haven’t been for a while. At that moment, two choices present themselves to you. You can either give into the little things in life that may not be the most responsible choice, but they make you happy, or you could live life like how society tells you to, and fear the public’s opinions.

Misogynistic content circulates online, impacting schools. (Photo courtesy of Pexels)

OPINION: The US must educate youth on the dangers of misogyny

How far should a society go in order to correct a power imbalance between groups of people? What happens when the side effects of this power imbalance are ignored? On one scale, it is casual; the president of the United States insulted the women’s olympic hockey team, meanwhile the men’s hockey team erupted in laughter at this degradation of achievement by female athletes competing in the same sport.

Frankfurt: Main character energy?

Have you ever thought about spending a semester abroad? Germany may not have made it onto your top three list, right? The combination of lederhosen, beer, techno and half-timbered houses is not exactly…enchanting. In the unlikely cases where Germany does find its way onto the list Frankfurt rarely does. For many, it’s either “the airport,” or “that city with bankers.”

After completing their training at Dream Academy, Katseye became a global sensation, but some think that they could be so much more. (Photo courtesy of IMDb)

OPINION: Katseye could be the unstoppable, but only if their labels let them

Beginning way back in 2022, new trainees were brought into talent agencies Hybe and Geffens “pop academy,” a place meant to form the world's next global girl group. The goal of the academy was to take these young women and train them in dance, vocal and stage presence skills, so that they may rise above the competition and take the performance industry by storm.

The Accessibility Resource Center offers academic accommodations at the College. (Photo by Erin Reilly)

OPINION: ARC can do better

The Accessibility Resource Center at the College offers an opportunity for students with disabilities to receive accommodations in whatever regard they require. This is a necessary resource to have in order to maintain the College’s mission of Division of Excellence to persons with disabilities. ARC does not offer the opportunity and help that it has said to allow, but there is still room to improve and truly offer a fully inclusive and easier process for students struggling.

Nicki Minaj’s recent alignment with President Donald Trump has left her fans searching for a new queen of rap. (Photo courtesy of IMDb)

OPINION: Nicki Minaj's loss in popularity makes room for new rappers to grow

Onika Tanya Miraj-Petty, known famously as Nicki Minaj, has been dubbed by many as the “Queen of Rap” since the early 2010s. Beginning with her debut album “Pink Friday,” Nicki has given audiences unique verses with a level of swagger that showed the world that she is unapologetically herself. While her talent can’t be questioned, her character has always put fans in a strange position.
